Call for fishing to be allowed at Halesowen park

Leasowes Park
Fishermen are calling for angling rights to be reinstated on the main pool at Leasowes bringing an end to a two year ban.

Paul Thomas and Dr John Tate have started a petition calling for fishing to be allowed on four purpose built platforms on the site’s main pool for an 18 month trial period.

It already has more than 100 signatures.

The pair have submitted the proposal to Dudley Council as a two year suspension on fishing at the park, off Mucklow Hill , is about to expire. Mr Thomas  had fished at the popular beauty spot for 30 years.
The 64-year-old retired teacher said: “This ban is stopping good responsible people from enjoying a spot of fishing. “The park is for the benefit of the whole community and anglers care as much about the environment as anyone else.”

Mr Thomas said the pool was never overfished with there being around just three fishermen for ten months of the year with this rising to a maximum of six in the summer. He and Dr Tate have been  meeting with friends group and council officers over the issue.

He said: “Wildly exaggerated claims as to how bad things were before the current suspension and how wonderful things are now continue to be offered with little basis in fact.”

The main pool is home to roach, tench, carp and pike amongst others.

Councillor Tracy Wood, cabinet member for environment and culture, said: "We will be considering our options following the current suspension. “As a council we want to support all users of the park"

Anyone who wants to sign the petition can find it at Mal Storey’s angling shop in Hagley Road, Halesowen and J & P Tackle also known as BWL, Belfont  Trading Estate, Mucklow Hill, Halesowen. (See tacke shop page for addresses)

Hopefully the council will allow it to be fished again. There are some good size carp in there. I also agree with Paul Thomas that anglers care as much about the environment as anyone else.
If they had a park warden patroling the lake every few hours or so maybe they could keep watch for the ones who have spoil it for everyone else.

Hopefully the Environment Agency bailiffs scheme comes to the region and they will attended more venues, then they would catch the ones who are cheating honest anglers with prosecution and a hefty fine so they would think twice to get a licence.
