WALSALL ANGLERS FINED HUNDREDS FOR FISHING WITHOUT A LICENCE

Two Walsall anglers have landed a bill of £443 each after fishing without a licence.

Dean Edwards, 54, of Signal Grove, in Bloxwich, was proved guilty in his absence of fishing without a licence at Issac Walton Pool, off Stafford Road, in the town on August 31 last year.

Nicholas Smith, 37, of Foster Street, in Blakenall, was proved guilty in his absence of the same offence at Chorley Springs Fisheries, off Tithe Barn Lane, in Burntwood, on September 10. Both were ordered to pay a total of £443, including a fine of £220, £135 costs and an £88 victim surcharge.

The cases were among six brought by the Environment Agency at Northampton Magistrates Court.

Nichola Tomlinson, fisheries enforcement team leader at the Environment Agency, said: "We hope the penalties received by these illegal anglers will act as a deterrent to anyone who is thinking of breaking the laws and byelaws we have in place across England.

"The cases show how seriously the courts take these offences and the anglers have been rightly punished for the illegal fishing they undertook last year. Fishing illegally can incur a fine of up to £2,500 and offenders can also have their fishing equipment seized.

"llegal fishing undermines the Environment Agency’s efforts to protect fish stocks and make fishing sustainable.  Money raised from fishing licence sales is used to protect and improve fish stocks and fisheries for the benefit of anglers and, for those caught cheating the system, we will always prosecute."

THE BIG ONE 2023 AT STONELEIGH CANCELLED

Annocement from The Big One Stoneleigh organisers

After much consideration and with a heavy heart we must announce the cancellation of The Big One at Stoneleigh due to take place on 1-2nd April 2023.
After a successful launch in 2019, a fantastic show in 2020 and managing to bring a show together last year in a challenging post-Covid environment. We are saddened that the lack of support from some key brands and last-minute stand cancelations has meant that we would be delivering a sub-standard event for both visitors and exhibitors. We would like to take this opportunity to thank, and apologise, to all the visitors and exhibitors that had planned to support the event.

If you were one of the thousands that had already booked your ticket for Stoneleigh, you will receive an email from SEE Tickets (Tuesday 24th January) explaining that you can use your ticket at Farnborough or how to claim a full refund.

The Big One at Farnborough will still go ahead on 4-5th March with great manufacturer support, strong ticket sales and we will move some of the feature content across to complement and make the Farnborough show even bigger and better than before.

We already have a strong line up of guest speakers on the Main Stage including Ali Hamidi, Dave Levy and Nick Speed as well as the Angling Times Theatre hosted by top all-rounder Des Taylor.

The Lure Live area will also be returning for the first time since 2019 with more than 70 predator-based brands in attendance and a giant tank for live demos from some of the best lure anglers in the business.

We’d like to stress that this isn’t the end for The Big One Stoneleigh.

Once we have more manufacturers’ support, we will look at bringing the event back to the Midlands where we know there is a strong and passionate angling base.

Thank you for your continued support.

AN ANGLING TRUST VOLUNTARY BAILIFF PATROL AND REPORT HAS ENSURED THAT A PERSISTENT OFFENDER HAS BEEN CAUGHT.

2/1/2023

Steve Lile is the Warwickshire Voluntary Bailiff Service Coordinator, and had a great result out on his patrols. Having twice encountered the same person fishing illegally, Steve asked them to leave, both times prompting them to become
obstructive and abusive and continuing to fish.

Steve reported this to the police, but due to dealing with other matters at the time, they couldn’t respond. He then (as all voluntary bailiffs would do), submitted a report on the Environment Agency Voluntary Bailiff website, where it was picked up by the Fisheries Enforcement Officers team.

They acted swiftly and conducted a series of local patrols spotting the car linked with these crimes. They found the person fishing without permission, and without a fishing licence.

This simple partnership between all groups helps rid our banks of illegal fishing and protect the habitats that we all enjoy and invest in.

Could you follow Steve’s example? If you are already one of our voluntary bailiffs, remember you are our eyes and ears when out on the banks.

He was ordered to pay a total penalty £345, including a fine of £150, costs of £135, and a victim surcharge of £60.

Nichola Tomlinson, Fisheries Enforcement Team Leader at the Environment Agency, said:

"These anglers have been rightly punished for the illegal fishing they undertook this summer, and the cases show how seriously the courts take these offences. We hope the penalties received by the illegal anglers will act as a deterrent to anyone who is thinking of breaking the laws and byelaws we have in place across England.

Fishing illegally can incur a fine of up to £2,500 and offenders can also have their fishing equipment seized. We inspect rod licences 24/7, 7 days a week to check on cases of illegal fishing.

Illegal fishing undermines the Environment Agency’s efforts to protect fish stocks and make fishing sustainable.  Money raised from fishing licence sales is used to protect and improve fish stocks and fisheries for the benefit of anglers and, for those caught cheating the system, we will always prosecute.

The Environment Agency carries out enforcement work all year round and is supported by partners including the police and the Angling Trust. Fisheries enforcement work is intelligence-led, targeting known hot-spots and where illegal fishing is reported."

Anyone with information about illegal fishing activities can contact the Environment Agency incident hotline 24/7 on 0800 807060 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
