Another £400,000 of rod licence money is being made available to the Angling Improvement Fund (AIF) to support around 160 new angling projects over the next four months in time for a busy spring and summer at fishing venues across the country. The Angling Trust, which administers the fund on behalf of the Environment Agency, is seeking applications by January 13th from
angling providers such as clubs, commercial fisheries, local authorities and charities.

The themes this time are:

Fish protection and predation management:
About 20 projects will be funded for work such as otter fencing, protection from fish-eating birds, fish refuges or even marginal planting or installation of aerators.

Project design and development, and workforce/volunteer training:
Around 20 projects will receive grants towards the costs of design work, disability access planning, risk assessments and advice needed to get improvements to facilities off the ground. Other work in this theme can include fish stock surveys and training for fisheries staff, club officials and volunteers.

Illegal poachers have been caught fishing at a Kidderminster park over the weekend.

A number of individuals were found to be fishing at Stacks Pool in Springfield Park, Broadwaters, on Saturday, July 9, following a night patrol from the Environment Agency (EA).
An EA spokesperson said: "A number of individuals were found to be fishing without a rod licence at Stacks Pool, Kidderminster over the weekend

"Their details were taken and they will be dealt with by our national enforcement team.

"We urge any members of the public to report any illegal fishing to our incident hotline 0870 70 60 50."

Labour councillor for Broadwaters, Steve Walker, who is one of 10 water bailiffs that patrol the area, urged people to pay for licences to help the local environment.
He added: "The Stacks Pool in Springfield Park has been over hauled.

"We are very proud of our Stacks Pool and ask for vigilance and respect towards our environment.

"A lot of time effort and money has, and still is, being invested into this area, including fish.

"We want people to fish our pool - it's only £3.00 a day or £20 annually and all bailiffs can issue day passes."

Councillor Walker also helps promote
Operation Leviathan, a national campaign involving West Mercia Police which is designed to tackle illegal fishing.

The Environment Agency has revealed that more than £500,000 worth of fines were issued to rod licence cheats during 2015 and 2016 – the most successful crackdown on illegal fishing ever.
The Environment Agency has revealed that more than £500,000 worth of fines were issued to rod licence cheats during 2015 and 2016 – the most successful crackdown on illegal fishing ever.

Enforcement has been given a huge boost this year with the national roll-out of the Voluntary Bailiff Service. Additionally, countless police forces have pledged their support to battling angling crime.

More than 62,000 licences were checked in the last two years, resulting in 1,987 prosecution cases being filed for those caught without one.

Dilip Sarkar, the Angling Trust’s National Enforcement Manager, said: “The team effort by the EA, police, fishery owners and anglers from all over the country has been immensely effective.

“We have been able to empower anglers via the Voluntary Bailiff Service, train the police and courts, address the migrant angler issue and initiate multi-agency operations which have increased intelligence and support available to the EA.

“As a result, angling has never been in a stronger position to protect fish and fisheries and crack down on licence cheats.”

Among the most effective forces on the ground in 2015 and 2016 were the Environment Agency patrol teams, deployed weekly to check that anglers are obeying the law.
