Jan Porter has passed away at the age of 60. Jan was one of fishing’s most recognisable personalities, respected for his many achievements in various branches of the sport. Jan always had a smile on his face and was an inspiration for thousands of anglers who enjoyed his TV and written work over four decades. |
Announcing the news on Jan’s Facebook page, his wife Melanie posted: “It is with much sadness to say that my gorgeous, wonderful, loving husband and father to Sam and Danielle, Jan, passed away yesterday evening. After battling cancer for the past 3.5 years he managed to hang on for 2 years longer than expected through sheer determination and passion for life.” Melanie added: “Jan's wish is to have a very private quiet funeral and in his words ‘If Bowie can do it, so can I’ – please respect this. Much love and may he be up there fishing with his dad, Terry now xxx”

The fishermen had to endure freezing temperatures and continual downpours which failed to dampen their spirits.
They were later treated to free food at The Britannia Inn in Wollaston High Street, where a raffle was also held. Dave was keen to raise funds for the charity as his 13-year-old step-daughter Poppie-Mai, who was born 16 weeks early - weighing just 1lb 8oz, is registered blind as she suffers from a condition called retinopathy of prematurity as a result of her premature birth. The condition, however, hasn't held back the brave youngster who attends Ridgewood High School in Wollaston and who has been keen over the years to help Dave and mum Natalie in their charity fundraising for the Beacon Centre, Cancer Research UK and other causes. Kelly Vickers, fundraising officer at the Beacon Centre, said: “We are extremely grateful for the support from Poppie and her family and this donation will help us to continue supporting local people living with sight loss." |
