Operation CLAMPDOWN 5 has swung into action as the sport tries to stamp out illegal fishing in the closed season. With the rivers and numerous stillwaters shut between March 14th and June 16th, the Angling Trust’s Voluntary Bailiff Service will be out in force to prevent rule
out in force to prevent rule breakers. And with 324 bailiffs now signed up, the blitz will be bigger than ever!
During Operation CLAMPDOWN 5, the volunteers will be reporting any suspicious activity to the Environment Agency – and police if illegal fishing on private waters is spotted.

Offenders face a hefty penalty if convicted as the maximum fine for fishing illegally during the close season is £50,000.
Judy Proctor, Head of Fisheries at the Environment Agency, said: “People who illegally fish waters covered by the statutory close season are cheating the angling community. The majority of anglers, who fish legally, rightly demand that we take action to catch offenders.

“Our enforcement officers, supported by Angling Trust voluntary bailiffs, will be targeting illegal fishing again this year and anyone caught can expect a significant fine. We urge anyone spotting illegal fishing to report it as quickly as possible by calling our incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.”

Chief Inspector Martin Sims, Head of the UK National Wildlife Crime Unit, said:”I have been personally involved training some of the Volunteer Bailiffs and have really enjoyed getting involved. What they will add is further resilience to the Environment Agency in ensuring people do not break the law, providing eyes and ears along our rivers and streams while they are off limits throughout the coarse close season. I commend all partners for getting this scheme off the ground and look forward to working with the Volunteer Bailiffs.”

Dilip Sarkar MBE, Angling Trust National Enforcement Manager and a retired West Mercia Police officer, said: “This annual multi-agency operation is an important one, providing an ideal opportunity for all partners to work together to protect fish and fisheries. Our volunteers are trained to report incidents and information to a high evidential standard, contributing to the intelligence-led system, and are essential to this process. We are grateful to each and every one.”

The Voluntary Bailiff Service is currently recruiting more volunteers all over the country. If you are interested please email [email protected] for more information.

New-look rod licences revealed!

The new-look rod licences have been revealed this week – with a three brand new designs from top artist David Miller.

A big linear mirror carp adorns the newly introduced three-rod
licence, while a brown trout features on the standard two-rod version and a salmon can be found on the salmon and sea trout permit.
As part of a revolutionary change from the old system, the licences will now run for a year from the date of purchase and only those over 17 will need to purchase one.

Artist David Miller said: “I’m delighted to have provided the images for the fishing licences again this year, not only because it gave me the opportunity to paint three species for the first time but also because all the money raised goes back into supporting fisheries. Of the three I was particularly pleased with the brown trout, my favourite UK game fish, and one I love to fish for on small rivers and streams.”

Judy Proctor, Head of Fisheries at the Environment Agency, said: “We hope David’s stunning images encourage people to give fishing a go. Angling creates over 37,000 full time jobs and generates over £1 billion for the UK economy, but at its heart it’s a much loved outdoor sport connecting people with nature. We’ve listened to anglers’ concerns and improved the fishing licence to make the process of getting out and fishing legally simpler.”

Calling all bailiffs!!

If you haven't yet got around to deciding whether to get involved in the Voluntary Bailiff Service you really need to make your minds up soon.
The next Midlands VBS induction day and the ONLY one for 2017 will be held on Saturday 29th April in Worcester, so you still have a few weeks left to become a part of the wider fisheries enforcement initiative to tackle fish theft and illegal angling in the Midlands. I am really keen to get more interest generated so please consider a couple of questions that you should ask yourselves...

1. If we as passionate anglers will not assist the EA to look after our sport for the future generations - then who will?

2. If we don't get involved now - when will we ever?

A lot of anglers said it was well overdue when we started VBS just over 12 months ago so there is no reason to delay getting involved any further. After all, at Phase 1 all we ask of you is that you go fishing or walking and talking to people and report back to us what you see and hear whilst enjoying the day. That is it - it really is!! There are NO high expectations about the number of hours you have to put in or inconvenient commitments or appointments for you to keep and EVERY reason to contribute by becoming part of our team.

If anyone has a good reason why every angling club or association in the country should not have at least one or two voluntary bailiffs as part of VBS then please email or message me that reason as I'd be very interested in your thoughts. It is absolutely essential for us all be part of an information-sharing network and to be better connected with the EA and local police so that we can pull together and protect our waters.

We stand at a crossroads in fishing in this country and we really need to get organised and enthused about making sure that future generations will have the fantastic experiences we have all enjoyed through angling, so please...

GET INVOLVED TODAY! you are ALL welcome.

Please email any expressions of interest to [email protected] who will send you more details of VBS and how to apply. VBS members currently need to be members of Angling Trust for insurance purposes but membership brings many advantages so check out the AT website today.

Thank you
