INCONSIDERATE dog owners are dumping bags of poo at an entrance to a Halesowen beauty spot rather than taking them home at the end of their walks. Fisherman Norman Edwards has been calling on Dudley Council and the Canal and River Trust to provide a bin next to the path in Chancel Way that leads to the Dudley No. 2 canal and bridge at Coombs Wood, for four years. |
Mr Edwards, who runs the Bullfisheries Fishing Club, said his members regularly look after the canalside.
He said: “Dog owners park in Chancel Way and take their pets for walks along the towpath. They clear up after them but when they get back they don’t want to put the bags in their cars and as there is no bin, they just drop them.
“We have lots of members who are pensioners and it really is unpleasant to have all these bags dumped.”
Mr Edwards, whose members enjoy monthly fishing competitions at the canal, said he had been told the bin would be “too far off the beaten track” for council workmen to empty it.
“But it wouldn’t – it could be placed by the path on Chancel Way, they’d only have to step out of their van to reach it,” he added.
John Millar, acting strategic director for environment, economy and housing, said the council was now liaising with the Canal and River Trust to request a bin is installed.
He added: “We also have active enforcement officers working in the borough who will go to locations where we receive reports of people failing to clear up appropriately after their pets.
“We have only received one report of fouling in this area in the last 12 months so would remind people to call 0300 555 2345 to report any further incidents.”
