Cars, bikes and snakes found in canal clean up

A national survey to record all the weird and wonderful items people throw into their local waterway has uncovered some bizarre objects. From a Mercedes A class car to open safes and a bag of bullets – discarded rubbish is a major nuisance to the Canal & River Trust.
Over the past five years the charity, which cares for more than 2,000 miles of waterways, has hauled out an unexploded World War 2 hand grenade, a 16ft dead python, antique poison bottles, a Volkswagen Camper Van and a pizza delivery bike complete with a soggy pizza.

Other items include a headless Paddington Bear, a bus stop sign, bubble machine, hearing aid, a darts medal, and an adult toy.
It costs the charity about £1 million each year to clear the dumped rubbish, funds that could be spent on improving wildlife habitats and ensuring the waterways are navigable for boaters.

However, this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of volume of rubbish. It often can’t recover every item which means it lies on the bottom of the canal bed out of sight and mind to many passers-by, causing problems to boaters and wildlife.

This winter, as part of its major £45 million restoration and repairs programme, the charity conducted a four month survey to record the rubbish being removed from the canals and to reveal what lurks beneath the waterline.

The survey results found that a typical ‘tennis court sized’ lock contains the following:
1x bicycle
1x shopping trolley1x traffic cone

67x glass bottles
4x tyres
150x plastic bags
23x cans
3x windlasses (sometimes known as ‘lock keys’)

Every year thousands of plastic bags and fizzy drink cans are thrown into the waterways but just one of those cans can take up to 200 years to biodegrade and a supermarket plastic bag up to 20 years.

The rubbish is not only an eyesore but has a real environmental effect on the waterways. Tyres and other rubbish contain pollutants which leak into the water and poison fish and other wildlife. Often rubbish acts as a choking hazard and wildlife can become trapped amongst the litter.

Peter Birch, National Environment Manager for the Canal & River Trust, said: “I’m constantly surprised at what people throw into the canal and the quantity of litter that we retrieve. Dealing with the problem is a big task and the money could be better spent enhancing the canals for people and wildlife to enjoy for years to come.”

£1 million dredging project on Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal

The Canal and River Trust have started work on an eight month project to dredge sections of the 46-mile Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal from Tixall Lock in Staffordshire to Falling Sand Lock near Kidderminster.
The work will focus on areas along the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal where boaters are having difficulty mooring alongside the canal, navigating through bridges or getting stuck on the approach to locks. In total around 17,500 tonnes of silt – which is the same in weight as over 13,000 fully grown hippos – will be removed from the canal.

Using a floating dredger, silt and debris which has built up along the bottom of the canal over a number of years, will be scrapped off the bottom of the waterway. Once collected the silt will either be reused for bank stabilisation or sent to landfill.

The Midlands has become the third region to adopt the new Voluntary Bailiff Service (VBS) as the sport looks to crackdown on illegal fishing and rod licence evasion.

In a scheme made possible by the Angling Trust and the Environment Agency, 33 successful applicants were unveiled and will now help police the banks of venues

across Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

The event was jointly hosted by Angling Trust Midlands Regional Enforcement Manager Kevin Pearson, a retired West Midlands Police inspector, and Environment Agency VBS Project Manager Adrian Brightley.

Kevin Pearson said: "This was a fantastic day for angling in the Midlands with 33 volunteers joining Phase 1 Voluntary Bailiff Service and offering their support to the Environment Agency and the Police in tackling poaching and all angling-related crime. I am very optimistic about the future and already have more volunteers ready to join at the next induction later in the year.”

Environment Agency Fisheries Enforcement Officer Chris Ponsford contributed to training at the induction and said: "The Environment Agency welcomes the opportunity to work with enthusiastic volunteers to help us in our continuing crackdown on illegal fishing and those that cheat angling by not buying a licence.

“We take illegal fishing very seriously. Anyone fishing illegally can expect to be prosecuted and face a substantial fine. The Volunteer Bailiff Service is an additional resource we can call on in the fight against evasion and illegal fishing.”

New rod licence

The new coarse fishing rod licence comes into effect from (March 1st) – and it’s a chub that features on this year’s licence.
Designed by renowned angling and wildlife artist, David Miller, it follows on from a crucian carp.

David Miller, the artist who designed the new rod licences, added: “Designing this year’s rod licence combines two of my passions: fishing and art. The Environment Agency does a fantastic job and I’m proud to be supporting rod licence sales with my artwork.”

A rod licence is a legal requirement for fishing. At £27 for coarse fishing and non-migratory trout, or £72 to also fish for salmon and sea trout, the annual licence is great value for money. There are flexible options to choose from too: a 1 or 8 day licence or the full season. There are also junior and concession options.

You can buy your rod licence online from the Post Office here, at your local Post Office or by phoning 0344 800 5386.
