England match fishing legend Tommy Pickering has announced he is to resign from his position as manager of Preston Innovations England Feeder Team with immediate effect. Tom will leave his role with Team England ranked number 1 in the FIPS-ed rankings and widely recognised as the best and most consistent feeder team in the world.
Tommy was appointed manager in 2011 when FIPSed first introduced the Feeder World Championships and led the team to Italy and resulted in a 5th place finish and an individual bronze medal for Steve Ringer. Since then the team flourished as the team secured a podium place in 6 of the following World Championships, 2 team gold, 1 team silver and 3 team bronze medals. With a team packed full of incredibly talented anglers, Individual medals followed with 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze. Tom and his team brought home a least one medal at every one of the eight World Championships they attended, an incredible feat.

Tom Pickering said “I am really proud of what the squad has achieved around the world, where ever they have gone have dominated feeder matches. We are ranked number 1 in the world and have the top 4 individuals in the world and personally I believe we have the top 6. My successor will have a fantastic base to start and have the quality to continue to dominate the world and nobody will be cheering louder than me.”

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time and hope I made a difference and I’d like to say a massive massive thank you to all the lads who have contributed to the team over the years. It hasn’t always worked but every decision I have made has been in the best interests of the team. I’d also like to extend a huge thank you to Preston Innovation for their incredible support over the years and Sensas for there fantastic support, without their sponsorship achieving what we have would I’m sure have been tougher. I’d like to thank the Angling Trust for giving me the opportunity and entrusting me to lead our nation’s team on the world stage and specifically Sandra Johnson for her continued and relentless support. Finally I would like to wish my successor and the team the very best of luck in your future endeavours and I will always be looking out for your results and cheering you on wherever you may be.”

Preston Innovations Feeder Team England is scheduled to compete in South Africa in the CIPS World Games in February 2019 and the Angling Trust will begin the search for a replacement manager immediately.

Ben Thompson, Senior Competitions Manager, Angling Trust said “its easy to focus on the incredible success that Tom and his team has achieved over the last 8 yeas but, he is a real gentleman and it has been a pleasure to work with. He has been a tremendous ambassador for Team England, the Angling Trust and match fishing in the UK. He will be a very hard act to follow but with the talent and experience we have in England I’m sure we will continue to be successful on the world stage.”

“On behalf of the Angling Trust, Team England and the many anglers who have followed the team’s progress over the years. I’d like to thank you for your commitment, dedication and expertise and wish you all the very best in whatever lies ahead.”

Why hundreds of dead fish are floating in Tamworth's rivers

Hundreds of dead fish have been seen floating in rivers in the Tamworth area, as oxygen levels in local rivers plunged.
The bodies of roach, perch, chub, dace, pike, barbel and gudgeon were found floating in the rivers Tame, Anker and Cole as officers worked tirelessly to reoxygenate the water.
Experts say that the crisis was caused by the weekend’s storms after the prolonged dry period.

A spokesman said: “This is a result of surface water run-off from the weekend thunderstorms following the very dry weather, causing oxygen levels to drop. Our officers are currently aerating the river to increase oxygen levels.”

But some local anglers were concerned that the reoxygenation had come too late.

Harry Ford, aged 79, of Reliant Angling Club, who has been fishing on the River Tame since the early 1970s, told the Herald on Tuesday: “I’ve never seen it so bad. It’s a total wipeout – it’s a dead river. Yesterday morning I counted about a hundred dead fish – today, there were several hundred. I couldn’t see any moving, or even any distressed – they are all dead. We had a pollution a few years ago, but nothing like this.”

Residents in Coleshill reported similar issues in the River Cole and in Mancetter, the river Anker was also affected.

The Environment Agency issued the following advice for anglers: “During prolonged warm, dry weather, avoid targeting larger, more sensitive fish like large chub, barbel and pike. Handle fish with wet hands and avoid using keepnets. "If you do use a keepnet, try to place it in deeper water, rather than parallel to the bank. Deeper, colder water will hold more oxygen than shallow marginal water. This is much better for the fish."

They added: “Wherever possible, keep fish in the water while unhooking and release them as soon as they’ve recovered. Try to take any photographs you want with fish in the water and where possible, release them into deeper, faster flowing water, where it is safe to do so. This will help recovery. If fish need help to recover then hold them upright and with their head facing into the current, to allow clear oxygenated water to flow across their gills. You can also hold fish in a landing net in the river current until they show strong signs of movement. This may take several minutes but it is best if the fish is fully recovered before being released.”

Exclusive figures obtained under freedom of information laws show there were 386 prosecutions in our region in the financial year 2017/18

Anglers in the West Midlands were fined more than £60,000 for illegal fishing last year.

Exclusive figures obtained under freedom of information laws show there were 386 prosecutions in our region in the financial year 2017/18.

Some 378 of those were successful, with fines totalling £62,190. The average fine handed out was £165.

The prosecutions were brought by the Environment Agency (EA), who also issued 26 cautions in the West Midlands during the year.

Anglers need a rod licence to fish in most rivers in Britain. But they also need to follow a number of rules.

Offences that can constitute “illegal fishing” include attempting to catch fish in a prohibited area, fishing for coarse fish or eels with more than four rods and lines at the same time, leaving an unattended rod and line in the water, fishing for salmon during the close season, and fishing for trout other than with an artificial fly or lure.

The data, provided by the EA, shows all prosecutions in courts in England.

Overall, this is a decrease compared to the previous year, when 2,407 prosecutions were concluded, of which 2,330 were successful. The total amount of fines collected in 2016/17 was £335,886.

In 2017/18 the Environment Agency also sent 160 cautions, up from 120 in 2016/17.
