Chare revealed ‘we will be reviewing how we licence multiple rods per angler, ways in which we can encourage juniors, the start and end dates of licences and the price of a licence – which has remained the same for five years.’
The multiple rod issue and the timing of licences have been on the agenda for many months, but the addition of the price increase to her annual battle cry – and the qualification it hasn’t increased since 2010 – is a clear indicator anglers are poised to pay more for their sport.
The current price of a licence is £27, with senior and concessions £18, 12-16s £5, with short term permits also available. The cost of a salmon and sea trout licence (migratory fish) can be more than double, whilst no licence is required for sea fishing.
Last year the EA raised £21.5m through licence sales – a figure that is dwindling especially in the youth sector.
