This summer’s Fish‘O’Mania has been postponed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Fish‘O’Mania Grand Final will now take place on Saturday, August 29th, starting at 11:30am at Hayfield Lakes, Doncaster.
This allows the postponed Fish‘O’Mania qualifiers to be re-arranged, ensuring a full schedule of 18 UK qualifying matches can take place. In addition to the five qualifying matches already postponed, all qualifiers scheduled to take place in May have now also been postponed. The new Fish‘O’Mania qualifying schedule can be seen at the bottom of this press release, along with information on how to transfer or refund your qualifier entry ticket.

Matchroom Multi Sport and the Angling Trust will continue to carefully monitor the ongoing situation and follow Government advice. Free spectator tickets for Fish‘O’Mania will be available to download from www.fishomania.net later this month.

Jamie Cook Chief Executive Officer of the Angling Trust commented: “The angling community has come together through this period and I thank competition anglers for their support. In order to ensure that the sport’s Blue Riband event can take place, we will continue to work with Government to ensure that safety advice is followed and that when we are able to fish again, there is a vibrant competition programme available to all.”

Emily Frazer, COO of Matchroom Multi Sport, added: “In conjunction with the Angling Trust, we have taken the decision to postpone this year’s Fish‘O’Mania until August 29th. We believe this will give us the best possible chance of staging all 18 UK qualifying events, allowing anglers across the country a chance of qualifying for this year’s Fish‘O’Mania.

“We will continue to work closely with the Angling Trust and our partner venues and thank them all for their assistance in helping us to swiftly reschedule our qualifying matches.”
The thoughts of everybody at Matchroom Multi Sport and the Angling Trust are with everybody around the world who is affected by COVID-19.

600LB OF FISH RESCUED FROM WORCESTER RACECOURSE

8/4/2020

Big roach, perch, bream and even salmon were among the 600lb of fish rescued from receding floodwater on Worcester Racecourse by the Environment Agency.

This remarkable two-day haul
shows not only the superb quality of fish in the Severn, but also the lasting impact of some of the worst flooding on record, after storms Ciara and Dennis caused the river to spill into the racecourse, next to which it flows.

John Cheyne, National Regions Manager at the Angling Trust, who was on scene to lend a hand with the netting, said:

“The roach in particular were of a lovely stamp, with stacks of fish between 5oz-8oz and a number that would be pushing 2lb.”

Seine nets were used by the EA, and these captured pretty much every species you’d expect to find in the middle Severn, as well as a few surprises.

“It was good to see a few juvenile salmon, known as parr, turn up alongside the coarse fish – even a rather  lost-looking crucian carp,” John added.

“The only fish conspicuous by their absence were barbel, but they are happy to get their heads down and stay in the main river as they are such strong swimmers.”

After being netted, the fish were moved to an aeration tank to provide them with oxygenated water, before being released back into the river.

“So many were caught that a big holding tank had to be emptied twice to ensure that they were not overcrowded,” John revealed.

Chris Bainger, Fisheries Technical Specialist with the EA, added:

“It was especially pleasing to return so many fish to the river before the spawning period.

“Undoubtedly, without the rescue operation many fish would have died, but there’s a good chance some of those we rescued will now go on to spawn this year and produce more fish. Saving the juvenile salmon was a particular highlight, as stocks of these are at a critical level in the Severn.”

It’s likely that there will be other stranded fish about, so if you find any, call the EA hotline on 0800 80 70 60.

ANGLERS TOLD TO ‘STAY SAFE, STAY HOME’ DURING CORONAVIRUS CRISIS

Jamie Cook of the Angling Trust has been busy trying to get answers and share information during the coronavirus crisis.
The Angling Trust has issued a further statement for anglers who have been trying to understand exactly where they stand during the deepening coronavirus crisis. Jamie Cook, Angling Trust chief executive, reminded anglers to ‘stay safe, stay home’.

The advice followed questions over the legality of fishing now and during the difficult
coronavirus ‘lockdown’ weeks ahead.

Jamie Cook, Angling Trust chief executive, reminded anglers to ‘stay safe, stay home’.

The advice followed questions over the legality of fishing now and during the difficult coronavirus ‘lockdown’ weeks ahead.

The permitted exercise and travel information issued by the Government was questioned by participants of many outdoor pursuits that are undertaken in a largely solitary way.

Many anglers from all disciplines were hoping to continue to isolate themselves safely, with social distancing, in the great outdoors.

There has, however, been a huge wave of support for the ‘stay at home’ message, and a wide range of top anglers have got behind it. Some anglers still want to fish on well away from other people.

The latest message to anglers

In an update issued on Friday, March 27, Jamie said: “The Angling Trust, alongside a number of other Sport England governing bodies, has been in contact with the Sports Minister at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

“The Minister thanked the sports sector for its united and professional response to minimising risk, saving lives and supporting our NHS.

“He stated that the guidance should be taken in the spirit it was delivered. Namely, to stay at home, stay safe and to avoid all but essential travel.

“He reaffirmed that now was not the time to be seeking loopholes and that the prescribed activities were clear – as a result those sports which were still advising activity have updated their policies not to participate and follow the government’s guidelines.”

What the Trust is doing now

Jamie continued: “We have had thousands of visits to our dedicated COVID 19 information hub and the phone lines have not stopped ringing since we launched.

“The Angling Trust is here to support the entire community and will next week be delivering dedicated content alongside partners to help all anglers maintain the fishing habit and as much as possible bring the ethos of the sport we love into your homes.

“In recognition of the need to support both physical health and mental wellbeing, Sport England have launched their Join the Movement campaign and to support this the Angling Trust will be introducing further resources across the coming weeks. If anyone has content they would like to share please email [email protected].”

Thanks for angling’s quick action
“I want to personally thank anglers, angling clubs and fisheries for taking strong and decisive action in the face of an unprecedented public health challenge,” said Jamie.

“We have come together as a community and your support has been nothing short of fantastic.

“I understand the frustration – as I look out of the window I like to think I know where the fish would be on my favourite waters and what tactics I would use to trick them.

“Fortunately we anglers practice patience like very few others and this situation is simply more important. And it is that patience we have to show now by remaining strong and doing the right thing.

“I thank you for doing your bit in staying inside, saving lives and supporting our NHS,” added Jamie.
