Join the Angling Trust for there first Online Fisheries Enforcement Workshop.

Building on the success of there ‘in-person workshops’ the Angling Trust are embracing the opportunities offered by the virtual world to deliver online workshops for more people to raise understanding of how they can support effective enforcement of fisheries legislation.

You will learn about the fisheries enforcement campaign run on behalf of the Environment Agency (EA), the EA's role in fisheries enforcement, the different legislation applied, and how links are built with anglers, the Police and CEFAS (fish inspectorate roles) to support enforcement.

Sessions covered include:

Fishing without permission and fish theft: Theft Act 1968
Health & Safety
Risk Assessment
Conflict Resolution
Environment Agency fisheries enforcement – how it works
Best Practice for angling club bailiffs and fishery rules
Rod licence compliance – how we can all help
Practical demonstration of what to look for: nets, lines and traps

Open to both members and non-members, simply register above, for the FREE event and you will be provided the link to join them on 25th February 2023 at 10:00am.

They are aiming to hold three workshops each year and we will annually deliver a review workshop where those who have attended workshops over the year can meet online to share experiences and learning.

FISHOMANIA 2023 TICKETS & QUALIFIERS ANNOUNCEMENT

The hottest tickets in angling go on sale on Friday February 3 as the FishOMania competition – with a whopping £50,000 up for grabs to the winner – launches for 2023.

This year will see tickets sold in TWO stages to allow anglers the best chance to grab a slice of the action in the longest running big-money event in British match fishing.

Also are revealed the locations of the 20 qualifiers which lead to the final – win one of them and you’ll be starring in front of the Sky TV cameras at the amazing Westwood Lakes on Saturday July 22, 2023.

The final will also see a familiar face back on the bank as organisers Matchroom Sport extend an invite to reigning champ Kristian Jones who’ll be returning to defend his title following an incredibly close victory in 2022.

He’ll be joined by the winner of the 2023 Angling Trust Ladies National – due to take place on July 8 at Rookery Waters – and the angler with the highest weight from the Cadet, Junior & Youth National Championships which will be fished on July 1 at Tunnel Barn Farm. Two international anglers will also qualify for the final.

HOW THE TICKETS WILL BE SOLD

The tickets will be offered in two stages via the Angling Trust website www.anglingtrust.net and you’ll need your membership number and password handy to be able to log in and buy.

STAGE 1 – Friday February 3 at 12 noon – tickets will go on sale on a one-angler, one-ticket basis allowing as many match anglers as possible to obtain a place on one of their favourite fisheries’ qualifiers. Stage 1 ticketing will end at midnight on Sunday February 5.

STAGE 2 – Monday February 6 at 12 noon – tickets will go on general sale and anglers will be able to purchase as many qualifier tickets as they wish until the event sells out.

MATT HAYES RAISES QUESTION OF ROD LICENCE BOYCOTT OVER POOR VALUE AND “TERRIBLE STATE OF RIVERS”

In a controversial statement to social media followers, Matt Hayes has questioned whether anglers should refuse to renew their fishing licence this year. Within just an hour, it had attracted hundreds of reactions and comments, showing both the passion and division of anglers on this topic.

After laying into the agency’s record on England’s rivers, not one of which has “good” health status, he wrote: “I don’t think we get anything worth having." “Surely it would be better to give the money to @fishlegal instead?” he continued, citing the Angling Trust’s law experts, who have fined countless polluters where the EA failed to act.

A majority of angler comments, which ran into the hundreds, were in support of Matt and joined the offensive.

“I’ve been saying this for years,” said Gary Huckins. “It’s just a tax on angling."

“Can’t see any tangible benefits,” added Wes Jones. “Fish theft and pollution are worse than ever.”

Another common complaint was over actual licence checks, with numerous anglers saying they hadn’t seen a bailiff in decades. One or two contributors were even brazen enough to admit they didn’t have a licence.

However, a significant number of others warned that defunding the EA would be a dangerous step, whilst pointing out the agency’s often overlooked work from river improvements to emergency rescues, and the severe potential consequences if the funding for this was lost.

“Removing the only funding it now gets is bound to make it work better - NOT!” said Eric Edwards. “If I call the EA, and I have done so a number of times, they come.”

Others were quick to point out helpful staff and grass roots impacts of rod licence money - along with a general lack of awareness over spending. This was especially obvious with regard to pollution and huge government cuts to the agency’s central budget to deal with this, which is entirely separate to the rod licence.

“I would say this is a rather ignorant post,” wrote Adam Johnstone. “There are many things that our licence fee is stretched to cover such as restocking, policing and much more. The issue is not with the money we provide. It is with government support to the agency. They are stretched thinner than ever as it is”.

“Surely you of all people know the amount of money that is made available to angling clubs through grants” said Darran Mulcahy. “If this was taken away many just couldn’t survive. Or even worse, they would have to put their fees up, meaning less people could afford to go fishing.”

Matt later clarified his position in no uncertain terms. “I realise this might raise some hackles, but we’re in a huge fight here,” he said. “Our rivers are in the worst state they’ve been in my lifetime.”

About the possibility of an actual boycott, he said: “I realise that there are good guys on the ground for the EA. I’ve met them. But the management is rotten. Where is the vision? We’re being failed. I’m not saying we should pull the rug from under the EA overnight - but it’s high time anglers made a statement and if things carry on as bad as they have been, we shouldn’t take that option off the table.”
