Mary Stevens Park restoration gathers pace with removal of 10,000 fish from Heath Pool

Major restoration work in Mary Stevens Park in Stourbridge has been gathering pace with the removal of fish from the pool.

There was a removal of around 10,000 resident fish from Heath Pool last Thursday and Friday.
Lost bikes and scooters, batteries, the front end of a motorcycle, obligatory shopping trolleys and old radios were also found in the pool which is being dredged for the first time since 1974 as part of the £3.1 million park revamp.

Councillor Hilary Bills, Dudley's cabinet member for environmental services, said the wildlife needed to be safely removed from the pool before a major operation to remove the silt gets underway.

She added: "Some of the fish were in poor health because of the historic water quality, something we are improving through this work, but the fish are now being treated at the fishery.

"For safety, the site will be sealed off until work is complete in the spring, but we will be keeping park users up to date with the work with signs up at the pool.

"We have been working closely with a number of environment and wildlife experts to ensure the safety of all the fish and other animals.”

Norton resident Lewis Payne, who has been creating a photographic record of the park restoration works, was among those watching the dramatic removal of the fish. He also caught a glimpse of one the park's famous resident terrapins.

Councillor Heather Rogers, chairman of the Friends of Mary Stevens Park, stressed no trauma was caused to the fish which were caught in large nets by experts from Furnace Mill Fishery and Wyre Forrest Aquaculture.

His wife frantically tried to rescue him but she was unable to pull the fisherman clear.

He was dragged from the water when police arrived but was confirmed dead at the scene.

£800 fine for fisherman caught without licence

An angler from Smethwick found fishing without a licence along the River Severn has been ordered to pay nearly £800.

Mareks Doniks, of Edgbaston Road, was approached by an Environment Agency enforcement officer while returning to his vehicle after being seen fishing at the Ripple Fishery, in Gloucestershire.

He was asked to produce his rod licence but was unable to do so. The officer told Doniks he had been seen fishing on the river earlier in the day.

After speaking with Doniks, officers returned to the location where he had been seen fishing.

They discovered a bag containing a dead bream and eel.

At a court appearance, Doniks pleaded not guilty claiming he was sitting on the riverbank but not fishing.

But Stroud Magistrates Court found him guilty of one charge relating to fishing without a rod licence.

He was ordered to pay a £50 fine, £717 costs and £15 victim surcharge - a total of a £782.

The offence took place on August 9 last year.

The court was told Environment Agency enforcement officers were patrolling as part of Operation Stone, a programme of targeted fisheries operations to reduce illegal fishing, fish removal and theft on the rivers Severn and Avon.

Speaking after the hearing, a spokesman for the Environment Agency said they were pleased with the sentence given to Doniks.

And they said it would be a stark warning to others who attempted to so the same thing.

The spokesman said: "No matter where anglers choose to fish in England they need a rod licence.

"The money raised by the sale of the licences helps us to carry out vital work to help maintain, develop and protect fisheries.

"This case sends out a clear message that we will not hesitate to prosecute individuals when they do not abide by the law."
