ROD LICENCE PRICES FROZEN FOR 2021 FOR THE FIFTH YEAR RUNNING

24/8/2020

Picture
The Environment Agency has revealed that rod licence prices will remain the same for the fifth year running, continuing to offer excellent value for money at just £30.00 for an annual permit.
While most anglers welcomed the decision, it didn’t go down well with all, as some were hoping for a form of compensation for missed fishing time during the lockdown earlier this year. The EA, however, supports its decision, citing the vital work that licences fund.

“The income from licence sales is vital for work including protecting habitats for fish, restocking rivers and improving facilities,” a spokesperson said.

“By keeping prices affordable, we also want to encourage as many people as possible to join this highly-rewarding sport.”

More angler's are fishing canals
THE NATION’S canals witnessed a surge in popularity among anglers following lockdown, it was revealed this week.
The Canal and River Trust (CRT) said that since sport resumed on May 13, there had been a significant rise in fresh faces lining the banks and a 30 per cent year-on-year hike in sales of tickets for the Canal Pairs Championships qualifiers and Waterway Wanderers fishing permits.

The CRT’s National Fisheries and Angling Manager John Ellis said:
“It’s fantastic to see families and people of all ages taking an interest in canal fishing again and rediscovering what they have to offer.

Many want to fish as close to home as possible and canals are perfect for this.

“The Canal Pairs Champs could see in excess of 200 participating anglers – which is a rarity in this arm of the sport. It’s an exciting time for canal fishing.”

The Angling Trust’s Let’s Fish campaign, which helps get families into fishing on canals for the very first time, is also now back up and running. Log onto the CRT’s website to book a free Let’s Fish session.

FISHING COACHING BOOMS

17/8/2020

Coaching sessions galore are still taking place this summer despite the coronavirus crisis.
Although National Fishing Month was cancelled, new anglers can still get a taster session this year.

And the Canal & River Trust has vowed to carry on coaching to their maximum capacity under Covid-19 rules said John Ellis, fishery manager for the CRT.

"The start of our own Let's Fish! programme of coaching sessions on canals was delayed from March, but we managed to get underway on July 17, and we will continue till the end of October, the virus permitting.

"But there are a number of restrictions and changes - this year everyone has to book a time slot rather than be able to just turn up, but they will get an hour's session rather than a half hour, so it might actually be better for them individually.
"But we are restricting numbers to 20 a day, and the total of events is reduced from last year, although we will still run 155 all around the country.

"Also this year, our Junior Canal Championship will be split over two days rather than one, and at two different venues. The 7-10 cadet group and 16-20 youth will be on the Shropshire Union at Little Onn on September 19, and 11-15 juniors on the same canal the next day, at Soudley.

"And this year, the top ten in that junior group will automatically qualify to fish the Talent Pathway, which is a kind of England Trial.
"So really now we cover the whole spectrum from absolute novice to possible England representative," John enthused.

Meanwhile, the Angling Trust has still been attending coaching sessions. Chief executive Jamie Cook said: "Coaching has been going ahead under strict Covid-19 guidance with direct contact removed.

"Angling coaches have all been kept updated and best practice guidance is available via the Trust support hub.
"With many fisheries and clubs seeing an influx of lapsed and new anglers, the requirement for qualified coaches is perhaps greater than ever.

"For individuals, clubs, fisheries or community groups that wish to qualify as coaches, please visit the AT website for information on upcoming courses and availability," added Jamie.

WARWICKSHIRE AVON UNDER THREAT FROM POACHERS

Job done ... but how many more poachers are there on the Avon? PC Andy Stevenson poses with the equipment that was confiscated.
Police have successfully apprehended two men illegally fishing at one of the country's most iconic river stretches the Warwickshire Avon at Luddington.
Two officers were on night patrol near the river when they responded to a request for assistance with catching three men suspiciously fishing at the venue. controlled by Stratford upon Avon AA. PC Andy Stevenson explained: "PC Craig Purcell and I were recently out patrolling the Bidford-on-Avon area in the early hours when we heard over the radio that
response officers had located three people fishing on the River Avon near Luddington. "As the officers approached, one male decided he didn't fancy hanging around, so jumped in the river to get away.

"We attended to assist in a search for the male and utilised our 4x4 capability to access areas others couldn't.
"We spotted a suspicious car with two males in it nearby, and on stopping the car determined that they had been fishing in a private members-only area.

"Neither of them had a current rod licence or permission to be fishing the area. We reported the males for offences that will result in a future court date, and to prevent further illegal fishing we seized their equipment, as shown in the picture. A forfeiture request will be made to Magistrates when the court date arrives.

"Unfortunately, the third male wasn't located, but signs were found that someone had exited the river slightly downstream ... someone had a very wet and cold walk home.

"We will continue to work with the Environment Agency and Angling Trust on these issues to help legitimate anglers. "Operation Leviathan is a national multi-agency operation to prevent, detect and prosecute those illegally fishing that Warwickshire Police are proud to support." Stratford upon Avon AA has been experiencing a number of problems with poaching in recent years.

Chairman Mai Hallows commented: "Sadly we have a big problem with illegal fishing in the area. that is mainly a seasonal issue when we have migrant labour coming over to work in agriculture. "Unfortunately, they will take and eat everything and anything nowadays. Initially, it seemed to be mainly pike and zander, which in fact for a while helped improve silver fish stocks, but now all species appear to be fair game.

"It's often problematic confronting the offenders, who always come up with excuses like they think it's free fishing or taking any number of fish from the river to eat is allowable. We have found them with as many as six rods each. "Nets have been discovered, and during the lockdown in May, we even found one with floats on going all the way across the river at Seven Meadows," Mai added.

In line with current government guidance around spectators at sports events, this year’s Fish’O’Mania will be staged behind closed doors, with live coverage on Sky Sports, DAZN and Matchroom.Live on Saturday 29th August 2020.
Matchroom Multi Sport and Angling Trust have remained in contact with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and were hopeful of being able to welcome spectators to this year’s Fish’O’Mania. However, following the recent announcement that pilot events for spectators at live sport would be paused, this will not be possible.

Fish’O’Mania will still go ahead at Hayfield Lakes on Saturday, August 29 with 24 anglers competing for the £50,000 first prize. Fish’O’Mania NXTGEN will also go ahead as planned, with eight young anglers competing for a £2,500 winner’s cheque.

Matchroom Multi Sport and Sky Sports are working together to add new innovations to the live broadcast of Fish’O’Mania, ensuring fans who would usually attend can still enjoy Fish’O’Mania in full, live on Sky Sports.

Improvements will include new aerial footage of the match and improved online live scoring so fans can follow the action as weights are recorded every 30 minutes. For the first time, Fish’O’Mania NXTGEN will also have live scoring, with weigh-ins every 60 minutes during the four-hour match.

Fish’O’Mania will begin at 11:30am on Saturday 29th August 2020, live on Sky Sports and international broadcast partners including DAZN and Matchroom.Live.

In the build up to this year’s Fish’O’Mania, highlights from all 26 previous Fish’O’Mania finals will be available free to watch at Matchroom.Live and on the Matchroom Multi Sport YouTube channel.

Take A Friend Fishing Extends Until October 2020
The second wave of free rod licences, part of the Take A Friend Fishing initiative, is another boost for angling following the recent rise in the number of people tackling waters.
James Roche, partnership development manager at the Angling Trust, said "As a result of its success, we have pushed the Environment Agency to run another Take a Friend Fishing period this year. "We had confirmation from the EA that they will enable TAFF to run again between August 14th and October 4th 2020.

The extended period is great news, and will no doubt enable more people to introduce someone that they know to fishing. The offer enables anglers to get a free one-day licence worth £6.00 to introduce a pal, partner, colleague or family member to fishing.
The offer will be available online, via takeafriendfishing.co.uk. You'll need to register basic details, including your rod licence number and the date of your fishing trip. Your friend will then be able to activate a confirmation email to access a free fishing licence voucher. Social distancing is, of course, still essential for people who are outside the same household or restrictions 'bubble’.

Picture
It is with great regret, that The Big One Farnborough must announce the cancellation of its proposed rescheduled event on 24-25 October 2020.

This decision has been made following the latest scientific advice around social distancing linked to the coronavirus pandemic and the current uncertainty around large indoor events.

The next Big One event at Farnborough will happen on 20-21 March 2021, where we plan to deliver the show you expect and deserve.
At the forefront of our minds has been, and will remain to be, the health and safety of all of those who come together to make the event happen - the visitors, trade exhibitors, partners, contractors and staff - as well as our wider responsibility to support the efforts to tackle this challenge to our everyday lives.

With this in mind, we will continue to work closely with the events industry bodies and follow all government guidance. If anything changes in the run-up to next year’s Farnborough date, we have another later date on stand-by.

We thank you for your co-operation and understanding during these unsettling times.

Message from The Big One Show Team;

'We are incredibly disappointed that we've had to take this action as we understand how important the show is both from an industry and community point of view. CARPERS AGAINST POACHING GROUP EMERGES SO EVEN MORE EYES AND EARS ON THE BANK

Picture
New Carpers Against Poaching Group Created
Two independent anti-poaching groups are looking to work together in their united crusade Hard on the heels of the formation of Local Anglers Against Poaching, comes news of another similar group.
Carpers Against Poaching has made use of the Iockdown period to launch itself as a Facebook group Main organiser Justin Mortlake explained "We started out as a group of Carpers concerned about the level of poaching taking place, hence our name, but we are open to any angler interested in helping tackle the problem.

"We operate as eyes and ears on the bank, looking out for any issues and bringing them to the attention of bailiffs and owners and if appropriate the EA and the Police. "We would discourage any of our members or anyone else from actually tackling poachers on their own as they could face aggression "In the carp world in particularly, there is a risk of organised poaching by gangs because of the value of some of the stock, but there is also an issue with individual anglers taking fish for the pot.

"We know this is very much custom and practice in many Eastern European cultures and a small minority from those communities either still don't know the rules here or decide to ignore them. "Our approach should be one of both education and also deterrent by prosecution, but one thing we mustn't do is demonise those communities - we have strict rules on our group against any abusive or racist responses to any allegations of poaching”.

"It’s the poaching issue that’s the problem not the ethnicity The Angling Trust's Building Bridges project does a great lob, but there still seems to be an on-going issue "Our Facebook group quickly got to 250 members. and we are about to set up a website for which I have purchased the domain name of carpersagainstpoaching.co.uk "We have also recruited carp ace Julian Cundiff as an ambassador and are hoping to get several other famous anglers on board.

“I have only just found out about the other group Local Anglers Against Poaching, and I am concerned about the possibility of fragmentation, so I will contact the organiser to discuss the possibility of Joining forces" LAAP organiser Greg McNally commented: "It might be that two separate organisations doing similar things is somewhat wasteful, so I would be happy to chat to Justin about how we move forward.”

Meanwhile, Fishery Watch continues to operate It was set up last year to operate a service not too dissimilar to that run by the Angling Trust's Voluntary Bailiff Service Founder. Adrian Lane reported "Fishery Watch is very much alive and doing very well and is now a trading name of the UK Angling & Conservation Group Ltd, which is a registered, not-for-profit company even our directors and I as chief executive officer, are all volunteers.

"We have been very busy in the background doing lots of things and membership has increased steadily plus we have two new ambassadors, Des Taylor and Adam Penning "During the remainder of this year we are Just continuing to patrol the waterways and fisheries around the country We are always available to support our voluntary water keepers 24 hours a day.

"We have a new members section on www.fisherywatch.co.uk that enables our waterkeepers to log patrols, report incidents, and we have secure and private intelligence forums as well 'We are also working very hard on UK Angling & Conservation Group Ltd; we are starting a swan rescue and wildlife rescue service; and we will be working towards looking after the environment surrounding fisheries, to protect the lovely wildlife that we all get to enjoy when we go fishing.” Adrian concluded.
