A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN EA FISHERIES ENFORCEMENT OFFICER

EA Officer Patrolling in the West Midlands
I am part of a team of Fishery Enforcement Officers that patrols the rivers, still waters and canals in the West Midlands ensuring anglers have a fishing licence and are complying with fishing regulations.
I love what I do because each day is different and since I started working as an Enforcement Officer 26 years ago I have had to deal with all sorts of offences including poaching, illegal fishing instruments; i.e. set lines, gill nets, traps and gaffes. I have also had to deal with illegal stocking of fish in still waters and the introduction of non-native species.

One of my main duties is to carry out fisheries enforcement work, which means, amongst other things, I check all anglers are fishing legally and have the correct licence for fishing. The money we raise from selling fishing licences is all used to improve and develop fisheries across the country.

These funds are incredibly important for the work we do to improve fishing for anglers across the West Midlands. The money raised is reinvested to improve facilities for anglers, help manage predation and protect stocks from illegal fishing.

We also carry out fish restocking, manage the impact of invasive species, restore and improve habitats and work with partners to encourage people to take up fishing for the first time.

Enforcement work is really important to ensure fish populations are protected. Our work includes: auditing and inspecting fish movements’ patrolling rivers to check no one is fishing in the closed season; educating the public and fishery owners and looking for unlicensed and prohibited nets and lines.

Throughout this year, we’ve been cracking down on people who do not buy a fishing licence and we’ve successfully prosecuted many anglers who have been operating without a licence, which has attracted some hefty fines (fines can be up to £2,500 – see our latest prosecutions at http://www.anglingtrust.net/page.asp?section=1012. Last year we checked over 9,500 licences in our Area and prosecuted more than 500 of those anglers who were fishing in the West Midlands area alone.

My role requires me to cover large areas and many fisheries.  My work is often intelligence led resulting in targeting specific areas where there are reports of people illegally fishing increasing the likelihood of finding people fishing illegally. As a team we also carry out boat patrols, as done recently along the rivers Severn and Avon.
Recently, I have been working in partnership with local police units in the West Midlands to target fish theft by crime groups in areas known to be ‘hotspots’ for fisheries offences. Our joint patrols have proved to be incredibly effective at tackling a wide range of issues that reduce safe and accessible fishing opportunities for local communities.

Patrols such as these also give us the chance to jointly gain valuable intelligence that can be used in the prevention and detection of more serious crimes. The majority of patrols go off without serious incident and in the Enforcement Team we are always looking for a compliant and safe outcome.

Anyone who sees or suspects illegal fishing activity can report it to our 24 hour incident hotline on 0800 807060.
If you’re thinking of going fishing, don’t forget to buy a fishing licence. It’s quick and easy and costs just £30.00 for a whole year just visit www.gov.uk.

The Mobile Tackle Shop
Forgotten fishing kit can ruin your day, but two brothers are coming to the rescue with their brand-new tackle and bait delivery service!
The Mobile Tackle Box is the creation of Lee and Dan Bridger

who since January have been driving to the aid of bankside anglers who have left essential tackle items at home.

Lee said: “There’s nothing worse than arriving at your peg and realising you’ve forgotten something important – Dan even left his bedchair at home once, having planned an overnight session!

“Around six months ago we bought a tackle shop and when business was tough, we thought, ‘if they can’t come to us, we’ll just go to them’ – so the Mobile Tackle Box was born.”

If initial reactions from customers are anything to go by, the future of the service looks rosy.

“It’s been such a rewarding feeling to see so many anglers take to our idea,” said Dan. I recall one guy who had a 48-hour session planned and ran out of gas for his stove almost immediately.

A quick call to us and we were on our way with a replacement bottle – you should have seen his face!"

After Years of Membership Decline, Anglers Are Gradually Joining Clubs Again

Since the advent of commercial fisheries in the late 1980's membership of angling clubs has been in decline, with many disappearing altogether. But
today, a band of smaller clubs are proving that if you get the foundations right, members will come.
Shrewsbury Anglers Club is a brilliant example of this. Just three years after being formed, it has more than 250 members and, while the chance to fish for double-figure barbel, 7lb chub and monster perch are an obvious draw for new members, Shrewsbury secretary Chris Wood reckons it's the club's proactive approach that is the main reason for their success. He said: "The club was created by four anglers meeting in a pub. Initially, it was just a social club, because they had no access to a fishery.

Six months later I came on board and we began to pick up waters. Our only goal initially was to bring realistically-priced fishing back to the community. Were known as the 'friendly club', and a place where we all share our love of fishing!' The use of social media has played a big part in the dub's fortunes and has been central to attracting younger members. Chris added: "We're highly active on social media. We advertise fishing days for our members - such as the pike angling trip we ran recently to the Fens.

We've also gained access to a pond to help coach the juniors, and 'dads and lads' matches have proved a big success. We've worked hard on improving our facilities too, with new fishing platforms and wheelchair-friendly pathways having been installed. "Juniors are integral to our dub, and anyone under 16 can fish for free with an existing member. There's such a positive feel among the lads, and we feel like a proper dub, not just a fishing organisation. We've actually had to close the membership this year -we've had so many people try to join! We don't want to risk losing the personal feel by continually expanding!'

John Williams, secretary of Birmingham AA which, although once much larger, remains a thriving concern, with 10,000 members. "You need good people running the club, good fishing opportunities on your books, and someone to drive the whole thing forward," he says. "If you have a good infrastructure, your members will be happy, and they'll encourage their mates to join!

If you’ve got a passion for huge fish you won't want to miss the upcoming The Big One Show at Stoneleigh after it was confirmed this week that the global fishing celebrity Jeremy Wade will be appearing. The star of the hit TV series River Monsters and Mighty
Rivers will be entertaining visitors with exclusive footage and stories of the exotic and predatory species which he has caught from all over the world during main stage Q&A sessions during both days of the event. Fans will also get the opportunity to meet Jeremy and purchase his books on the day. But if you prefer your fish with fewer teeth, it's also been announced that the world's No.1 feeder angler Steve Ringer will be holding demos on the unique indoor lake at both shows.

Visitors to the Stoneleigh show will gain a fascinating insight into Steve's approaches for tackling natural waters for bream and silvers. Big One event director Vince Davies said: "When it comes to the big names of our sport, they don't come much bigger than Jeremy and Steve and when you add them to the line-up of anglers already confirmed, they really are shows not to be missed.”
