LICENCE AND PERMIT Information

Don't forget your licence

You need a valid Environment Agency Rod Licence if you are aged 16 or over and fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel in England (except the River Tweed), Wales, and the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland.

How long is a fishing rod licence valid for?

Rod licences are valid for 1 day, 8 days and 12 months depending when it is bought.

A Full Season rod licence is valid for 12 months from from the day you buy it.

A 1 day rod licence is valid for 24 consecutive hours

An 8 day rod licence is valid for 192 consecutive hours from the start time and date

Concessions available

Senior - for age 65+

Disabled - for those in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (or Personal Independence Payment) and Blue Badge Holders. Please note, you will need your National Insurance number or Blue Badge number for your concession.

Post Office sells Rod Fishing Licences on behalf of the Environment Agency.      

Remember!


  • It is an offence to fish for freshwater fish and eels without a valid rod licence.
  • If you are caught you may be fined up to £2,500.
  • If you fish without a rod licence you are cheating other anglers.
  • Money raised through rod licence sales is invested in fisheries work to benefit all anglers.

CANAL AND RIVER TRUST: WATERWAYS WANDERERS SCHEME

Most fishing rights on our canal network are licensed to local angling clubs and you need a permit to fish those areas from that local club - see their fisheries listing or click Local Canal Guide for the nearest one to you.

Some stretches are not covered by local clubs. For those stretches you must have a Waterway Wanderers permits before you fish.

Permits for individual anglers

The Waterway Wanderers permit is an annual permit - it runs for 12 months from the date of issue.
  • Adult permits £26.00
  • Senior Citizens £16.00* (over the age of 65)
  • Juniors £6.00 (16 or under on the date of purchase)
*If you are an individual member of the Angling Trust, you also get the £10 concessionary rate - as long as you provide a photocopy of your membership card.

Membership of Birmingham Anglers Association is only available direct from the BAA office. Anyone wishing to join the Association, or to re-new existing membership, may do so by telephoning or calling in to the office during our normal hours of 9.30am and 2.00pm. Monday to Friday.
