Angling after funding bid for Leasowes pool

A plea has been made for a ditched funding bid to enhance a “neglected” pool in Halesowen’s historic Leasowes Park to be revived.
Plans to reel in £39,000 from the Big Lottery’s Awards for All
missed the deadline almost two years ago.
But keen angler Paul Thomas is calling for the bid to be signed off by the Friends of the Leasowes now and finally submitted.

He claimed Lady Pool has suffered from “horrendous neglect” in recent years and was in desperate need of restoration not just to improve angling but to boost the whole environment.

Mr Thomas, who has fished there for 40 years, said: “Overall, the pool surrounds continue to show evidence of gross neglect – unfettered growth of coarse vegetation, brambles, nettles, 6ft plus tree saplings etc and many rocks littering the shallow water edges.”

He added: “This is not in any way solely an angling issue, it’s for the whole ecology and visual benefit of the park and, therefore, is within the remit of the friends’ group to support.”

Dudley Council was not eligible to apply for the funding itself and Halesowen North councillor Hilary Bills, cabinet member for environmental services, said officers worked with the friends’ group and anglers to draft the funding bid.

She added: “Unfortunately, due to the serious illness of the chairman of the friends’ group, the proposal could not be progressed and the funding deadline was missed.”

Warwickshire Police, West Mercia Police and partners have launched Operation Leviathan, a campaign to raise awareness of fish theft, illegal angling and anti-social behaviour around waterways
Illegal fishing gangs and unlicensed anglers are being targeted in a new operation led by Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police alongside other police forces and in partnership with key stakeholders.

Operation Leviathan will see officers from Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police working alongside West Midlands Police, Gloucestershire Police, Cheshire Police, Gwent Police, Dyfed Powys Police and South Wales Police and the The Angling Trust, Fish Legal, Environment Agency, Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science(CEFAS) Police National Wildlife Crime Unit, Natural Resources Wales and other partners to stop illegal fishing and fish theft across the region.

Part of the operation, which launched on Thursday, 11 June 2015, will educate anglers who may not understand British conservation-based angling law, that it is an offence to take fish from rivers, lakes and waterways without permission, supported by the Angling Trust's 'Building Bridges' education and integration programme.

Operation Leviathan aims to coordinate action to stop fish poaching and illegal fishing by:

  • Prevention - offering best advice and education to anglers, private water owners and partner organisations about actions put in place to prevent poaching.

  • Intelligence - asking anglers to be observant and report suspicious activity to allow police to target offenders.

  • Enforcement - with good intelligence the police can target poachers and anti-social behaviour and take action. Officers will patrol riverbanks to tackle crime in targeted operations with partner agencies.

  • Reassurance - by working together and publicising actions including activity, arrests, seizures and convictions.
