KRISTIAN JONES IS CAZOO FISHOMANIA 2022 CHAMPION

Kristian Jones has won Cazoo FishOMania 2022 by the finest of margins as he claimed the £50,000 title with 56.750KG the Grand Final at Westwood Lakes in Boston, Lincolnshire thanks to a mammoth 10kg+ final weigh in to pip his rivals.
Jones struggled with the consistency of Art Hilmi, Andy Power and Andy Dyson early on with the three shallow fishing for F1s to make it work and look to take it away from Jones. Dyson had his moments where he looked to threaten and a key 7.6kg in the final weigh in meant he took second place for £10,000. Hilmi took his section prize of £2,000 whilst Paul Wright took his and Power took the others.

“My bank runner kept telling me I was too far behind. Fish for second. I wasn’t thinking about it. When they said I had beat Art, I couldn’t believe it. When It started going down the edge with bigger fish. I started to catch some proper carp. I knew if they kept coming I could catch up with Art catching F1s.  I didn’t think I’d catch up. I was amazed when I found out.”

“What I thought was, when I had the lull keep feeding the edge. I started to start seeing some fish come back in. The first fish in the sixth was a 6lb carp. It was different. I expected shallow fishing to play a part for me but I binned it off and I concentrated on my edge and it came good.”

“I know the lake. We fish it well. It gave us some advantage. I did fancy it. You don’t believe it’s going to happen until it happens. I still didn’t believe it when they told me at the end.”

The 23-year old was much talked about heading into the contest as one of the younger anglers in the grand final and he struggled early on as he went for F1s. Jones admitted the change in strategy to focussing on his edge was the difference in the end as he claimed the prize money which he says will go towards a new fishing van.

Jones went on a run from the sixth weigh in to draw the gap close before sealing the deal in monumental style. 8.5kg got him going in the sixth; 6.4kg in the seventh; 5.3kg in the eighth; 8.50kg in the ninth and the final 10.325kg put the trophy and cheque in his arms.

Power and Hilmi were setting the early running. Early on, Power took the lead from Hilmi on several occasions by tiny margins. Jones meanwhile had the tougher start to to be out the picture early doors. Hilmi looked to have taken victory with just 5kg separating him and Dyson going into the final weigh-in before Jones knocked the pair out the park. Hilmi made only 3.225kg in the final weigh in and that was his race run.

Andy Bennett came into the day as the much favoured bookies favourite with odds of 9/4. The two-time winner qualified off a similar area of the lake to what he was on today but it wasn’t to be as he finished 18th with 32.525kg.

Picture
Anglers will be unable to purchase their rod licences from Post Offices in England and Wales from the beginning of next year. so from January 16, 2023 anglers will have to purchase their licences online via the Gov.uk website, or through the EA’s telesales service.
The Environment Agency will be moving all sales to online and telesales services will help make savings which can then be reinvested  in its fisheries service, as well as helping the agency work towards its carbon net zero targets.

Anglers will be able to renew their licence using the on-line service or via the helpline number 0344 800 5386 from 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday except on public holidays.  Call charges may apply depending on service providers.

EXTREME HEAT: ENVIRONMENT AGENCY CALLS ON PUBLIC TO HELP PROTECT FISH

19/7/2022

With a rare Red Extreme Heat Warning issued by the Met Office for Monday 18 July and Tuesday 19 July, the Environment Agency is calling on anglers, fisheries owners and the public to help them protect vulnerable fish stocks.
Extreme weather, including continuous hot temperatures and thunderstorms, can be highly dangerous for fish and can cause a range of problems, particularly for more susceptible species like salmon and pike. Hot and sunny weather typically triggers algal blooms, which can reduce dissolved oxygen levels in our waters leading to fish becoming distressed and, in some cases, dying.

In the last week, Environment Agency officers have helped protect thousands of fish in Worcestershire and Essex thanks to anglers, fisheries owners and the public reporting concerns to our Incident Hotline on 0800 80 70 60 or alerting the fishery owner or angling club.

Fish should never be moved to other waters by the public because they are unlikely to survive and could spread disease or invasive species by accident, which can damage fish and other wildlife in the area.

Heidi Stone, Fisheries Partnerships Manager at the Environment Agency, said:

Environment Agency teams are working hard to mitigate the impacts of recent high temperatures and are monitoring the situation closely when it comes to protecting fish at risk.

We aim to respond to reports of fish in distress as quickly as possible. Help from the public goes a long way which is why we provide free advice to all on how to protect fish during hot weather.

Last week in Worcestershire, the Environment Agency deployed several aeration pumps to an angling club’s fishery after dissolved oxygen levels fell to around 15 per cent. This rapid response saved thousands of vulnerable fish and averted a significant fish mortality.

At another fishery in Basildon, Essex, Environment Agency officers deployed aerators after the report of 1,000 dead fish at a fishery owned by the borough council. Dissolved oxygen levels have since recovered due to prompt reporting and a rapid response from EA fisheries officers.

Environment Agency incident response work includes deploying aeration equipment or hydrogen peroxide to restore dissolved oxygen levels, providing expert advice to angling clubs and anglers, and occasionally, as a last resort, relocating fish. All of this work is funded by fishing licence income – and provides a vital life line to fisheries when they most need it.

Many angling clubs and fisheries carry out effective practices to help manage and mitigate the impacts of continued hot temperatures on fisheries, but a list of ten top tips are available to guide people on how to protect vital stocks and prevent fish deaths where possible.

Anglers can also help vulnerable fish stocks by minimising use of bait, taking care when playing, landing and releasing large or sensitive fish, such as pike, barbel, trout and salmon, as well as avoiding taking photos of fish out of water to avoid further oxygen loss.

Anyone who sees fish in distress should contact the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60.
