A number of fish have been found dead at a pool near Cannock.

The Environment Agency have been working to oxygenate the water in the pool in to help save as many fish as possible.
The fish were discovered at a pool in Norton Canes on Wednesday and staff from the Environment Agency were still at the scene on Thursday morning.

It is not yet known exactly how many fish have died.

Dave Throup, from the Enviornment Agency, said: "We’re dealing with a significant fish kill on a pool near Cannock.

"We’re on site artificially oxygenating the water to try to save as many fish as possible."

Jim Kitchen, from the Environment Agency added: “We are continuing to aerate the fishing pool and to offer advice and guidance to the fisheries owner in order to reduce the environmental impact on site.

"We are also monitoring the local water course to ensure there is no impact further downstream.”

DON'T PANIC ROD LICENCE SALES MAY JUST BE A STATISTICAL BLIP

Despite an apparent decline in the numbers of those who fish, it’s not all doom and gloom.

The Environment Agency has revealed that during August there was a 14 per cent decline in licence sales compared to the same time last year.
However, according to an EA spokesman there are several important factors to be taken into account regarding the figures.

“These monthly comparison figures don’t take into account the popular introduction of the 365-day licence and three-rod licence.” he said.

“We know these licences have changed sales patterns and we will be able to make an accurate comparison next April. The Environment Agency produces figures for fishing licence sales each financial year. The new figures won’t be available until April 2019, when we can make accurate year-on-year comparions .”

While acknowledging that now is not the best time to assess the data, the Angling Trust has called for all branches of the sport to pull together to reverse the situation. The Trust’s Chief Executive, Mark Lloyd, commented: “We need stronger engagement from the angling trade and from government if we are to make progress.

“We need to make angling part of young people’s everyday lives and we will campaign and build programmes to get angling into the school curriculum and part of the growing Scouts and Guides movement.

“With these stats in mind, it’s worth recognising that despite the many challenges facing angling it’s important to remain positive and fully support strategies aimed at bringing newcomers to the sport.”

He also mentioned cultural changes that have led to a decline in participation of other sports, including football and tennis.

Highlights of the Trust’s efforts to increase participation in angling include over 1,800 events held across the country which introduced over 47,000 adults and 30,000 juniors to
 the sport.

In addition to these events, the Environment Agency is constantly working on developing a National Angling Strategy aimed at conveying the health and social benefits of angling, and how it can be used to help drive environmental improvements.

Swan rescued after fishing hook and line Became embedded in tongue

Anglers have been urged to safely dispose of netting, lines and hooks after a swan was found with a fishing hook embedded in his tongue. The RSPCA was called after a member of the public spotted the distressed male swan at Warren's Hall Country Park in Rowley Regis.
Visitors to the park said the swan had been spotted with a fishing line coming out of his mouth for a couple of days and were concerned for his well-being.

RSPCA inspector Nayman Dunderdale was called to the scene and was able to entice the swan towards him with food and remove the hook from his tongue.

The swan appeared unscathed so was released back to his waiting partner.

Inspector Dunderdale said: “The swan was obviously distressed and will have been struggling to feed. I took out a small size 18 hook with a weight and line attached and luckily he seemed unharmed.

“Fishing litter in our waterways is a major problem and it is so damaging to wildlife.

"I would urge people to be responsible and remember to take home any litter if you go fishing – discarded lines and hooks can easily snag water birds and other wildlife, causing terrible injuries and suffering.”
