ABBEY FIELDS FISH TO BE MOVED AFTER THOUSANDS KILLED BY DROUGHT CONDITIONS

A crowdfunding campaign raised nearly £2,000, which paid for the pumps and generators.
Volunteers are racing against time to try and save hundreds of fish at a popular local beauty spot.
More than 300 fish are already believed to have died at Abbey Fields lake, in Kenilworth, due to low water levels caused by the heatwave.
Last week, Warwick District Council suggested it was largely powerless to help and warned more would die.

That prompted people to raise money and arrange for pumps to replenish the lake in a bid to save some fish.

They say the remaining carp in the lake were "buzzing" following their intervention - although the Environment Agency warned pumping water in could make matters worse.

Severn Trent Water had initially told the local authority to stop adding water from the mains, due to shortages.

On Monday, the water firm initially offered to supply non-drinking water, but following a review said various options had been explored but were not "technically viable or appropriate".

Volunteer Calum Thorpe said 19,000 litres of fresh water had been added to the lake.

The people behind the effort to save the fish remain desperate to find a long-term solution, with local business owner Darren Rees among those who stepped forward to help over the weekend.

"Before we got the pumps in, all the fish in the water seemed to have gone limp," he said. "As soon as the new water starting flowing in they were buzzing though and you could see them all jumping out above the surface."

Mr Rees called on the local authority to discuss measures with the Environment Agency, anglers and others to avoid a repeat of the problem as climate change is expected to cause more frequent heatwaves.

Kenilworth councillor Richard Hales praised the "heart-warming" community spirit involved.

"When the water started going in there was a big cheer from everyone there," he said.

"It was phenomenal."

However, the Environment Agency said using pumps and aerators in bodies of still water experiencing low levels would disturb the sediment and actually reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen, not improve it.

It added that transporting the carp elsewhere in high temperatures could result in more dying and put other fisheries at risk from "disease or overstocking".

Warwick District Council has been contacted for a comment.

Following a successful relaunch in 2021, national fishing month is back for 2022! National fishing month is an angling trades association initiative supported by the angling trust and the environment agency.
This year, National Fishing Month will look to celebrate all forms of angling, spreading awareness of all the benefits that angling can bring to people that have never tried it before.
This is your opportunity to get behind the campaign and help introduce new people into fishing or help get people back into the sport.

Whether it is running a Get Fishing taster day at your club or fishery, an open day at your tackle shop or providing a discount on day tickets, we want to hear from you. To support your activity we are working on a number of exclusive resources and assets including poster templates, social media animations and a toolkit for you to use to help promote your activity.

This year’s campaign sees the launch of a new online registration process that will encourage the public to be a part of National Fishing Month. By Signing Up, the public will be able to access a free pack of resources including a Get into Fishing booklet, fish information wall chart and fishing log book. Registered people will also receive regular email updates throughout National Fishing Month with information on all the activities and offers taking place, links to local fishing venues as well as top tips on how to get fishing.
This is a fantastic opportunity for your organisation to be a part of a summer full of activity, giving a whole new generation the chance to get into the sport we all love.

For more information on how you can get involved in National Fishing Month in 2022, please visit: www.nationalfishingmonth.com

Last year, the Environment Agency sold 1,090,068 individual freshwater fishing licences to adults living in England, compared to 1,019,723 in the previous year 2019/20. This boom in sales has allowed the Environment Agency to fund even more vital restoration work to protect fish stocks, increase biodiversity, create and restore over 3,000 hectares of fisheries habitat, and sustain a healthier water environment.

Thanks to rod licence income, in the last year the Environment Agency has opened up or improves habitats for fish on 575 kilometres (km) of rivers and enhanced 153 hectares (ha) of stillwater fisheries.
