Dead fish have been found floating in the pool at a Stourbridge park are believed to have died due to reduced oxygen levels in the water during recent rain storms.

Hundreds of lifeless fish were found in Heath Pool in Mary Stevens Park,
after stormy weather at the weekend.

Dudley Council said they have since been removed and council chiefs promised to keep an eye on the pool.

James O'Sullivan, 47, from Dudley, who took images of the fish at Mary Stevens Park, said: "It's a park that I walk around daily, I walk around at half six in the morning normally. It was a bit of shock, it was yesterday that I saw the smaller fish and today that I saw the bigger ones.

"I know there is a film on the water, they say it is an algae bloom. It's a shame really that the council won't invest in something more capable of protecting wildlife. There were brownies in the park yesterday that saw the fish, it's traumatising really."

The latest mass deaths come as reports flooded in of thousands of fish carcasses in West Park, Wolverhampton, and the River Tame in Elford.

James Reardon, 34, from Dudley, said: "I came walking down here and it looked horrible, there were hundreds of the things floating in the water.

Councillor Damian Corfield, Dudley Council’s cabinet member for highways and environmental services, said of the news: “We have sadly lost some of the fish population in the pool at Mary Stevens Park.

“We believe the deaths are due to the storms we’ve had this week, which can significantly reduce oxygen levels in the water. The dead fish have now been removed and we will continue to monitor the situation.”

Residents have also called for councils to be proactive with wildlife conservation, saying that councils should prepare for future weather events.

Mr Reardon added: "I think it's something that the council needs to do more about. They know this happens now, they should plan more in the future to save the wildlife we have. It's unforeseen circumstances, but now we know this happens, councils should do more to protect our animals."

Jamie Boyd, 28, a marine biologist from Wales, said: "Dry weather and thunderstorms can really affect the comfort of fish and severely reduce oxygen levels in the water due to the way that algae work.

"The reduced oxygen levels can put a lot of stress on aquatic life, even to the point of death, and reduced oxygen levels means that some fish will die from asphyxiation."

THOUSANDS OF DEAD FISH CLEARED FROM POOLS IN WOLVERHAMPTON AND STAFFORDSHIRE FOLLOWING HEAVY THUNDERSTORMS

Thousands of dead fish have been removed from pools across the Midlands following heavy thunderstorms.

Residents across the Midlands have expressed concern over wildlife safety after thousands of

dead fish including carp have died since the wild weather hit.

Footage sent to the Express & Star by Kulvir Bains shows hundreds of dead fish being cleared away from West Park in Wolverhampton on Tuesday morning.

Dead fish have also been seen in pools in Lichfield and Perton.

Wolverhampton Council has said that the cause of death of the fish is the warm weather and thunderstorms that hit the Midlands this week.

Mr Bains, from Wolverhampton, said: "It's horrible to see these dead fish. All of the older people who come down here to watch the fish and the pond saw all of this, it's horrible.

"It's a filthy pond, so it might be down to that. There is always some sort of rubbish in there and algae, it's filthy. It needs cleaning."
Wolverhampton Council has said that the mass death of the fish is due to the recent hot weather and thunderstorms experienced in the Midlands, also saying that they are working with the Environment Agency to "manage the situation".

Kieran Newman, 43, of Wolverhampton, said: "It's disgusting to see this many dead fish. I have been coming here for well over three years and love feeding the fish where I can.
"It's a shame, I think it's due to the thunderstorms and the heat, I know sudden heat changes can kill fish. I just hope something can be done."

Footage was also sent to the Express & Star by a resident in Lichfield who witnessed hundreds of the dead fish float downstream in the Rive Tame in Elford.

Simon Turner, from Elford, said: "We have just observed literally hundreds of the dead fish floating down the River Tame in Elford down stream of Tamworth. Clearly river pollution."
Craig Widow, an angler from Staffordshire, added: "I have seen a few dead fish around yea, it's definitely more than normal which is quite concerning.

"You usually get stuff like this happening after thunderstorms I think, it's not out of the ordinary, it's still sad to see though."
Councillor Craig Collingswood, cabinet member for city environment and climate change, said: "We are aware of the death of fish in the lake at West Park and are working with the Environment Agency to manage the situation.

Councillor Collingswood said that the situation is a natural result of warm weather conditions, which trigger algae blooms, which can reduce oxygen levels in lakes, leading to fish being distressed and in some cases, dying.

The councillor went on to say that weather monitoring is ongoing, and measures are in place to safeguard future wildlife.
Councillor Collingswood added: "We have been monitoring the weather forecast and installed an aerator in the lake more than a week ago.

"We have now installed a second aerator to help boost the oxygen supply. We will continue to work with the Environment Agency to ensure oxygen is at the required level."
The council said the fish are being removed and will review whether to replace the dead fish over the late autumn and winter months.
The council also advised people to "stay out of the water at all times".

A spokesperson for Pipehill fisheries, on Walsall Road, Lichfield, said: "A few of pools of the pools oxygen levels dropped, I think it was two our of three of the pools dropped, but we turned on the extra pumps and we managed to get through it without any incidents.

"There is a lot of factors that go into the safety of the fish to be honest, we have also had a bit of cross wind on the night time too, which will stress the fish as well, but we are on top of it."

DEAD FISH LITTER CANAL AS RESCUE MISSION LAUNCHED ON WORCESTER AND BIRMINGHAM CANAL

James Kirk of MEM Fisheries sets up the air pump which will increase oxygen levels as he is caught in a race against time to save as many fish as he can.
There were multiple reports about the dead fish in canals due to the hot weather and thunderstorms with up to 700 dead in one spot alone.
The bodies of fish washed up near Blockhouse Lock on the Worcester and Birmingham Canal on Monday due to falling oxygen levels in the canal.

Fish could be seen struggling near the surface but many dead fish had collected near lock 4, close to the city's Lock Street.

A race against time took place on Monday to save as many fish as possible by using pumps to increase the oxygen levels in that section of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal.

James Kirk, of MEM Fisheries performing work on behalf of the Canal and River Trust, said there were 'no more dead fish' near Blockhouse Lock after they used pumps to aerate the water in the canal to save as many of the surviving fish as possible before they too succumbed.

However, he said: "There are between 500 and 700 dead fish - that's a good estimate."

In a measure of the dedication of contractors, they remained there yesterday afternoon, monitoring the situation, after staying in tents by the canal overnight despite an amber weather warning for thunderstorms issued by the Met Office.

A spokesperson for the Canal and River Trust said: "We are aware that there are several areas where we have reports of fish in distress along several of our canals.

"This is due to several factors: the water temperatures are very high (over 20 degrees), this combined with warm air temperatures, thunderstorms (which cause low pressure and subsequent low dissolved oxygen levels in water) and storm drains discharging into our canals after a heavy downpour.

"We are doing what we can to raise the oxygen levels and are working with our specialist fish contractor as well as the Environment Agency to aerate the water and prevent any further fish from dying.

Whilst it’s not unusual for warm temperatures to affect oxygen levels in the water we are dealing with multiple reports from members of the public about fish in distress across our canals.
"We would urge if anyone sees any fish in distress to call us on 03030 404040 or call the Environment Agency 0800 80 70 60."
