WEST BROMWICH MEN FINED OVER £900 FOR OVERNIGHT FISHING TRIP IN WORCESTERSHIRE

Two men from West Bromwich have been fined more than £450 each for fishing at a beauty spot overnight. Krzsztof Budzynski and Rafal Szalczewski admitted removing fish and eel - including protected species - from the
River Avon in Pershore, Worcestershire, on July 23, 2021, at 10.40pm.

They were found in possession of the fish by a bailiff who worked the Birmingham Angling Association (BAA). The men subsequently breached fishing rights set by the BAA, which owns and governs the location.

The rules state that any fish caught must be returned alive and fishing is only allowed until one hour after sunset. All of the fish were found to be dead.

The bailiff contacted West Mercia Police and a police officer attended the scene. The officer then seized the fish - which included Chub, Perch and Bream - along with the anglers' fishing equipment and then handed it to the bailiff.

Budzynski, 33, of Gladstone Street, and 43-year-old Szalczewski, of Glover Street, appeared at Redditch Magistrates on March 7 after their cases were brought to court by the Environment Agency. Both men pleaded guilty to the offences of the removal of fish and the removal of eel.

The anglers got the same penalty, including a fine of £100 for the first offence and £200 for the second offence. Costs of £135 were awarded to the Environment Agency and there was a victim surcharge of £34, amounting to £469 for each angler.

Following the verdict, Nichola Tomlinson, fisheries enforcement team leader for the Environment Agency, said: "This case demonstrates great partnership working as it involved West Mercia Police, the local angling club and the Angling Trust to enable us to bring about a successful prosecution. Whilst on this occasion both men had a valid fishing licence, it is also imperative for anglers to observe fishing byelaws.

"It also shows how seriously the courts take these offences and we hope the penalty will act as a deterrent to any angler who is thinking of breaking fishing byelaws. Not complying with the byelaws can incur a fine of up to £50,000 and, as in this case, offenders can also have their fishing equipment seized."

Two of Britain's most beautiful fish feature on the newly-released rod licences for the 2022/23 season - the elegant grayling and the bristling perch. Artist David Miller's exquisite work is again to the fore, with the grayling
appearing on the two-rod licence and the perch on the three-rod version.

On the migratory trout and salmon licence, a salmon is depicted. The Environment Agency is continuing its 'Licence to Chill' drive for the second year running, aiming to promote the wider health benefits of fishing.

Kevin Austin, deputy director of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment for the EA. says: "We are thrilled with the images that David has created. I hope they encourage existing and aspiring anglers to get outside and go fishing:' Prices start at £30.00

LATE STOURPORT SHOPKEEPER WAS 'CENTRE OF FISHING COMMUNITY'

Tributes have been paid to a Stourport shop owner at the "centre of the fishing community" who has died aged 55. Mark Lewis, who ran Mark's Fishing Tackle on Raven Street for 28 years, passed away on Thursday 3rd March after a battle with stomach and bowel cancer.
His partner of nine years, Helen Round, said he was an "amazing man" who loved helping people.

She said: "He hadn't got a bad bone in his body, all he wanted to do was help people. Mark was the centre of the fishing community. He was just out to help everybody. He had the most amazing warmth about him. He just had this glow about him. He'd be down that shop at half-past six every morning and sometimes he wouldn't leave until 7 in case somebody was finishing work late."

The couple had a holiday in Tenerife last November which Mark "didn't want to come home from."

He was diagnosed with cancer in late January and was able to spend his final days at home.

His sister Nina Potter said: "We were only just getting our heads around his diagnosis and now he's gone.

"He asked us to open the shop, which we did. I feel like the men around him are now going to feel very lost because he was their connection. They take the best first don't they?"

Residents paid tribute to the life-long fisher on social media, calling him a "legend" and a "gentleman." Others described his shop as an "Aladdin's cave".

The family has said the business will continue until stock is sold.

Helen added: "It's going to be a great loss to the town and everybody will agree on that."

Mark Lewis, the son of Beryl Lewis, leaves behind two step-children, Ashley and Jay, two grandchildren, Jake and Isla, niece Lucy and great-niece Honey.
