Following a successful relaunch in 2021, national fishing month is back for 2022! National fishing month is an angling trades association initiative supported by the angling trust and the environment agency.
This year, National Fishing Month will look to celebrate all forms of angling, spreading awareness of all the benefits that angling can bring to people that have never tried it before.

This is your opportunity to get behind the campaign and help introduce new people into fishing or help get people back into the sport.

Whether it is running a Get Fishing taster day at your club or fishery, an open day at your tackle shop or providing a discount on day tickets, we want to hear from you. To support your activity we are working on a number of exclusive resources and assets including poster templates, social media animations and a toolkit for you to use to help promote your activity.

This year’s campaign sees the launch of a new online registration process that will encourage the public to be a part of National Fishing Month. By Signing Up, the public will be able to access a free pack of resources including a Get into Fishing booklet, fish information wall chart and fishing log book. Registered people will also receive regular email updates throughout National Fishing Month with information on all the activities and offers taking place, links to local fishing venues as well as top tips on how to get fishing.

This is a fantastic opportunity for your organisation to be a part of a summer full of activity, giving a whole new generation the chance to get into the sport we all love. For more information on how you can get involved in National Fishing Month in 2022, please visit: www.nationalfishingmonth.com

Last year, the Environment Agency sold 1,090,068 individual freshwater fishing licences to adults living in England, compared to 1,019,723 in the previous year 2019/20. This boom in sales has allowed the Environment Agency to fund even more vital restoration work to protect fish stocks, increase biodiversity, create and restore over 3,000 hectares of fisheries habitat, and sustain a healthier water environment. Thanks to rod licence income, in the last year the Environment Agency has opened up or improves habitats for fish on 575 kilometres (km) of rivers and enhanced 153 hectares (ha) of stillwater fisheries.

About National Fishing Month

The Angling Trades Association created this initiative to encourage more people to get a taste for fishing. It works in partnership with the Angling Trust, Environment Agency and Canal & River Trust.

The Environment Agency is asking people across England and Wales to give fishing a go this National Fishing Month (1st-31st August 2022), which is back again this year and bigger than ever – celebrating the surging popularity of the sport among beginners during the pandemic. A series of events across the country will aim to get more people involved in the sport that’s surged in popularity since lockdown.

It’s a chance to get out in nature, have fun, spend time with others or relax on your own. Steps have been taken to improve inclusivity, with a calendar that features family-friendly and wheelchair-accessible events. Everyone is welcome – find a free event near them at nationalfishingmonth.com

TACKLE SHOP CELEBRATES ITS SECOND ANNIVERSARY THIS MONTH

A fishing tackle shop which opened in Bromsgrove just two days before the first pandemic lockdown is delighted to be celebrating its second anniversary this month.
In 2019 Richard Cooper decided to give up his role as a business consultant to focus on running a fishing tackle business. He recognised that Bromsgrove had lacked a dedicated angling shop
since Roy Huins had closed his Worcester Road outlet in the early 2000s. Richard spent a year conducting home-based research and leased retail premises at Sapphire Court on Bromsgrove Technology Park.

Following a three month refit he opened ‘Rods and Lines’ on March 21 2020 and was subsequently forced to close its doors two days later following the government’s ‘Stay at home’ policy.

Richard found himself with a fully stocked shop and rent to pay. Whilst the new business had a website its online shopping facility was in its infancy, but soon website sales were generating a good income. Richard also prepared a ‘click and collect’ service, for when restrictions were eased.

Fishing was one of the first activities to be allowed back on a wider scale when lockdown ended in May 2020 and Boris Johnson encouraged people to “go fishing and play golf”.

Rods and Lines experienced soaring sales and by the second lockdown in November 2020 was well placed for handling online and ‘click & collect’ orders.

Richard said: “When shops began to re-open after the first lockdown many fishing tackle businesses struggled with supply issues and stock shortages. We were lucky because our new shop had been fully stocked when forced to temporarily close. It was something of a blessing in disguise.”

Moving forward Rods and Lines has plans to expand the product ranges it offers, alongside the installation of a second floor to better display clothing and larger stock items.

VOLUNTEER BAILIFFS SUPPORT ENVIRONMENT AGENCY IN CLOSE SEASON CRACKDOWN

The Angling Trust’s Fisheries Enforcement Support Service and Voluntary Bailiff Service (VBS) will be delivering Operation Clampdown 10 in partnership with the Environment Agency’s fisheries officers during the annual coarse fishing close season on
rivers (March 15 – June 15 inclusive).
The VBS will be reporting suspicious activity and incidents to the Environment Agency and police. Anyone convicted of illegally fishing during the close season faces a significant fine and possible confiscation of equipment.

Kevin Austin, Deputy Director for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment at the Environment Agency, said:

“Every year, between March and June, our rivers begin to reawaken and our fish populations will soon begin spawning. The close season aims to protect fish during this delicate time to ensure they remain healthy and resilient. Alongside our fisheries improvement work, the close season gives our fish populations the chance to recover.

“Going fishing is a great way to connect with nature, relax and unwind – and we always encourage new anglers to give fishing a go. However, we are aware that not all new anglers will have knowledge of fishing rules like the close season. If you know a new angler, please remind them of the close season dates.

“Anglers who do still want to get out on the banks during the close season can still visit many stillwaters and canals, depending on landowner agreement, or try their hand at trout fishing, though a valid fishing licence is still required.
“The Environment Agency takes illegal fishing very seriously. Anyone fishing illegally should expect to be prosecuted and to face a substantial fine. Those who suspect illegal fishing should report it to the Environment Agency’s incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.”

Nino Brancato, Angling Trust National Enforcement Support Manager, said:

“After 10 years ,the positive impact of the work of the Voluntary Bailiff Service cannot be underestimated in supporting fisheries enforcement across England. A key part of this has been our work on Operation Clampdown.

“This year’s close season will be another great opportunity for the Fisheries Enforcement Support Service and the Voluntary Bailiff Service to work closely with the Environment Agency and police during Operation Clampdown 10.

“Our dedicated volunteer bailiffs will be out on patrol and taking part in coordinated joint activity around the nation’s waterways in an eyes and ears capacity – gathering intelligence and reporting incidents in support of our enforcement partners as part of our multi-agency approach to protecting fish and fisheries.”

Now in its 10th year, Operation Clampdown is a national multi-agency initiative targeting illegal fishing during the coarse fishing close season on rivers, streams, drains and specified canals as well as stillwaters that are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The Voluntary Bailiff Service is part of the Angling Trust’s Fisheries Enforcement Support Service, which is funded from fishing licence income and delivered in partnership with the Environment Agency.

There are still plenty of opportunities for anglers to get out on the banks to fish for coarse fish while rivers, streams, drains and other sites that the close season applies to are off-limits. The vast majority of stillwaters and canals in England remain open for fishing. Anglers should ensure they have the necessary permission to fish and a valid Environment Agency fishing licence.

  • Check your local byelaws for the list of sites included within the statutory close season.
  • All full licences now run for 365 days from purchase, make sure you know when yours expires. Buy a fish licence online.
  • Incidents of illegal fishing should be reported to the Environment Agency incident number 0800 80 70 60 or the Police on 101 to report a crime that does not require an emergency response or 999 to report a crime in progress.
