Roach
The roach is silver in colour, flat, and slender. often confused with the rudd the main diference is the eye color. Roach tend to have a reddish tint them. The most common fish in UK waters these fish are easy pickings. Found just about everywhere. Lakes, ponds, rivers and canals.
Roach make good sport and can often be had when the fishing seems slow. Generous loose feeding can get the shoal in with maggot, worm or sweetcorn on 2-3lb line and size 18-20 hooks to actually get them out.
Roach love casters and many a match has been won with this bait but, roach have a crafty habit of stealing casters and leaving you with an empty half shell. Bury the hook totally inside the caster; you will still be left with an empty half shell a few times but stand more chance burying the hook than hooking it through the end of the caster.
Baits to use
Hempseed, Tares, bread (either punch, flake or paste), castors, maggots, pinkies, stewed wheat, cheese, small red worm, brandlings and bloodworm.
