Description:
Located half a mile upstream and on the opposite bank to the Hampton Loade section is the Unicorn. Kinver Freeliners have owned the fishing rights here since 1993 and with good reason, it is an excellent venue. Famous for its barbel, this section of the middle Severn plays host to local anglers as well as attracting many visitors from all over the country wishing to spend some time of this majestic river and test themselves against the hard fighting barbel. The Unicorn fishery is situated in the camping field of the Unicorn Inn, a popular venue for holiday makers and anglers alike.
The stretch is 300 yards long with approximately 12 swims. This section of river has a more even bottom and flow than the stretch downstream and lends itself perfectly to float fishing. The barbel here grow big, probably as a result of the amount of bait that gets used each year. However, all species are aware of the regular availability of bait and this has led to a good concentration of fish on this short stretch.
The Unicorn produces many doubles each year with some quite spectacular fish reported though, as they cannot be fully authenticated. The chub grow large with genuine 6lb fish and the roach fare just as well with many one pound plus fish to be caught as well as the occasional magical two pounder.
The perch potential is untapped yet there is every chance that a four-pound fish could be caught as reports from reliable sources indicate their presence. Being in a camping field the Unicorn does get busy during the summer months and doesn`t quite offer the peace and seclusion of the stretch downstream but the fishing more than makes up for it. The fish do see pressure and as such can revert to feeding after dark when the daylight disturbance lessens, this is most noticeable during the summer months.
The bailiff regularly patrols and can offer up to date information should the angler need a bit of guidance with methods or swims. The river changes daily and our bailiff has years of experience reading the moods of the water so knows it better than most.

Tactics:
Fishing in coloured water with meat, paste and pellets will bring excellent sport. At other times, fishing over depth with a waggler and strong tackle, plus plenty of loose fed maggots, casters or corn will bring mixed bags, including barbel, in depths to 12ft.
The shallower, upstream swims fish well in the summer, but include many deeper holes, perfect for rolling meat. Float fishing big pieces of bread or link legering crust under the tree line will pick off chub.
