Description:
This is a wide and powerful mile-and-a-half section of the River Severn and it's best policy to ask in the local tackle shop which particular swims are productive at any given time of the year.
Barbel to 14lb, chub to 6lb, roach to 2lb, perch to 4lb, carp to 20lb, bream to 9lb, eels to 4lb and pike to 20lb are all present in the area.
There are shallow fast-water gravel runs, deep gullies, boulder-strewn rapids, fallen tree-created backwaters and long smooth glides. The venue has just about every conceivable type of peg to test your river skills.
The Blackrock stretch provides excellent year-round river angling. In summer specimen barbel from 8lb to 14lb can be caught on heavy lead rigs and PVA bags filled with chopped boilies, hemp and pellets. Pellets, corn or meat are generally the best hookbait options.
In winter the Blackrock section produces outstanding roach in 20lb to 30lb nets, with specimens of 2lb-plus taken each year on heavy 8BB stick float set-ups, fished along the nearside shelf with bronze and red maggots.
The first swim choice for you is peg 1, the top upstream peg, which has a large fallen tree to the left of the sitting position. It’s a noted barbel lie, especially if the river’s up. Pile in up to five pints of hempseed alongside the branches and fish heavy carp set-ups using braided mainlines with 10lb to 12lb mono hooklengths and meat on the hook.
Peg 8 is also a cracking barbel swim, while peg 18 is noted for some enormous chub.Fire in plenty of maggots to a large waggler tripping the shale and gravel bottom. Pile the feed in and shallow-up if bites tail off, as that means the fish have probably come up in the water.
On peg 19, the final selection, the base of the Blackrock goes down into the river. It’s very deep, at over 20ft, and a heavy feeder or lead set-up fished into the deeper water has taken big bream, barbel, pike and carp.

How to get there.....
From Junction 3 of the M5, take the A456 through Hagley to Kidderminster. Then take the A456 to Bewdley and after the railway bridge, turn left down the B4195. After a mile, turn right on to the Blackrock picnic site car park and park at the far end. The pathway that leads down to the river is at this end of the car park. |
