pinkies
The pinkie is the larva of the green bottle and in its natural state is pink in colour hence its name (pinkies). The pinkie is a great bait in colder conditions i,e autumn or winter and can be used as a feed maggot, loose fed mainly but due to its size can not be thrown very far so a catapult is recommended, it can also be used as a hook bait when bites are shy and hard to come by, and is a good bait for Bream, roach rudd perch etc. The pinkie is a escape artist as it can climb out of a bait box if allowed to sweat up or becomes damp, so keep them in the fridge to keep cold, and do not allow to get wet when fishing in the rain.
Squatts
Squats are used almost entirely in groundbait. They are a great holding bait for Bream and other fish. All fish like squats, and unlike maggots they will stay put and not crawl away or bury in mud or sand. The squat is not often used as a hookbait, however during hard winter months when bites are hard to come by, some match anglers have saved the day by using a Squat as a hookbait. If using as a hookbait, very fine fishing tackle needs to be used, with a very small hook of size 22 or less.
