Many anglers could swear by using meat as fishing bait but there would also be an equal number of people who would say it doesn’t work and this has caused a huge controversy in fishing. It is best to prepare this the day before fishing by cutting it into varying cube sizes to allow the meat to dry out a little, or it will be far too moist to use, then store it in a polythene bag and put in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it.

Pork Luncheon meat, is a fantastic bait for Barbel and Tench, it is typically used in small cubes on the hook, care must be taken when hooking as there is a tendancy to split the meat, similar to hooking a caster you can place the point through and around or the hook can be pushed completely thorugh and a stopper placed between the bend and the meat as you pull the hook back up, ie. a blade of grass or small twig, this stops the hook pulling straight through the meat.

Spicy Peperami sausage is a very popular hook bait for big fish. It can be presented with a few free offerings, or used in conjunction with luncheon meat, hemp and pellet feed. Peperami is tough so it stays on the hook well and it can also be hair-rigged. It’s a robust hook bait for long range casting, also good for trundling through fast flowing river swims. Barbel in particular love this stuff.
