BIRMINGHAM MAINLINE CANAL
The Birmingham Canal Mainline runs from the heart of Birmingham City Centre at Gas Street Basins near Broad Street and Birmingham's Mailbox to Aldersley Village on the outskirts of Wolverhampton. From Birmingham's Gas Street Basins where the Birmingham and Worcester Canal ends, the Birmingham Mainline canal runs under Broad Street and through Brindley Place, there are bars and restaurants and also Birminghams ICC, NIA and Sea Life Centre all sit alongside. At the NIA and Sea Life Centre there is a Canal Junction Farmers Bridge Junction, also known as Old Turn Junction where the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. The Birmingham Mainline Canal leaves the city centre and there are a few loop canals which leave the Mainline, Soho Loop and Icknield Loop. The Canal runs to Smethwick Junction where the old Mainline Canal splits away from the new Mainline. The Birmingham Mainline passes through Galton Valley where it passes Smethwick Pumping Station, the Birmingham Engine Arm, Galton Tunnel and Smethwick Galton Bridge. The canal runs to Pudding Green Junction where it meets with the Walsall Canal, there are a couple more junctions with the Gower Branch Canal and Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal, before reaching Tipton and the Old mainline returns to the Mainline here. The canal continues to Coseley and passes under the Coseley Tunnel and then meets with the Bradley Arm Branch at Deepfields Junction. The canal then winds around to Wolverhampton City Centre and then down 21 locks to Adldersley Village and aldersley Junction where it ends on the Staffordshire and Worcetser Canal, less than a mile from Autherley Junction where the Shropshire Union Canal can be accessed.
